I can't pick 3 fave bassists but I can give 5 fave bassists:

1. Geddy Lee
2.John Entwhistle
3. John Paul Jones
4.Jaco Pastorius
5 Marcus Miller

It also wouldn't be fair if I left Chris Squire, Steve Harris & John Deacon off the list.
Queen's John Deacon is a very under rated bass player....... Queen songs always had a good riff or Bass line. :)

Lots of bass players I like their playing, but they didn't influence me--so for influence--probably-

Roger Glover
Roy Montroy
Jack Bruce

Although I'm nowhere near as good as any of them, and don't sound like them.

Mine are:

Geezer Butler - N.I.B. was the first thing I remember playing on the bass

Geddy Lee - loved his sound, the complexity of Rush, and would sit in the practice room in 9th-10th grade playing along with Moving Pictures, Exit Stage Left, etc. Not that I got everything! But it pushed me early on

I think third would have to be a tie between Stanley Clarke and Chris Squire - but then I think of George Porter Jr.... This is too hard! Also John Wetton, Duck Dunn, Michael Henderson, Dave Holland, Mike Gordon, the list goes on and on...

This is always difficult for me as a lot of different bass players from different genres influenced me and my playing, but I have to pick 3 in no order, they would be:

Jason Newsted: Believe it not, during my earlier days when I got into metal, I was a big Metallica fan and Newsted's bass playing may have not been the greatest, but it caught my attention and I attribute my interest in the bass to him. Plus his on stage charisma is second to none.

Steve Harris: Also from my metal years. Newsted got me interested in the bass, Harris made me want to play it. To this day, after I gave up hard rock and heavy metal, the Harris influence still shows in my playing (primarily how I pluck the strings) despite being in a Blues-Rock band.

James Jamerson: Perhaps my prime influence in recent times. Granted he wasn't a blues bassist, it goes without question that Jamerson is the greatest bass player ever (in my eyes at least). I have long since incorporate his method of playing into my own and as much as I try to imitate him, I can never do it justice. What I love the most is how his bass lines perform as required, which is providing the rhythm section, but also matching the vocals and somewhat giving a hint of harmony to them.

If it's just 3 then it's got to be...

Bill Black (My mother was a huge Elvis fan, and also listened to a lot of the instrumental work he did with his Combo. That's where I developed my love the single coil P bass and Bass in general)

Dee Dee Ramone (his style made me realize that I could play bass in a rock band. That music was accessible for a kid with no money and less talent. The way his P bass drove the band like a freight train. Made your heart want to leap out of your chest)

Paul Simonon (His work with the Clash captivated me as a kid. The early Clash stuff was very similar to The Ramones work, but it quickly became more and more layered as time went on. His bass lines led to my love of reggae and branched me out into other music and made me appreciate other styles)

It's funny that you mention three, because there are actually three bands that influenced me more that anything:

Joy Division (Peter Hook)
The Cure (Simon Gallup)
Bauhaus (David J.)

Those are the main ones, if I were to pick three. Of course, there are various offshoots and bands related to them (New Order, Love & Rockets, etc.)

The funny thing is I'm not sure if I sound like any of those three, or maybe a combination of them all. I usually base my playing style around the vocal melody, while trying to fit in with the groove. I find slap bass obnoxious, and I don't believe in the so-called rules of not going past the fifth fret, or "money notes." I find that mentality is of someone with the only aspiration is to make money in some bar band doing blues covers. I actually read an article in Premier Guitar where the guy actually talked about how you should play like that. Sorry, I find that too safe and boring.

It's so funny you mention Simon and David J. Those would be my 4 and 5 followed by Steven Severin. I have a feeling we listen to a lot of the same music. lol

Jack Bruce, John Mc Vie, Pete Quaife, I was lucky enough to see Cream Live 3 times when they started on the club circuit in London, IMO their live sound was never surpassed by any other band i have seen since and to those who may remember their rendition of the 1812 overture and the end of their set where Eric played the theme, Ginger did the cannon fire and Jack did everything else the orchestra would do using a Fender 6 string bass....Unbelievable !! ....John McVie is pure class,I saw him with John Mayall and Peter Green He knows when not to play and makes the gap sound huge, Pete Quaife was a player who influenced a lot of Bassists although it was never fashionable to mention his name,Vastly underrated i heard the Kinks live in London and his live version of "you really got me" was a lot more involved than the record ! Probably the first bass player that i saw playing full chords on his Rickenbacker which for that period the late 60s was groundbreaking... 8)

I'm going to add support for the non-virtuous!

-Kim Deal (Pixies)

-Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads)

-Dee Dee Ramone.

(Also a big fan of Simonon, Michael Dempsey of the early Cure and Peter Hook of Joy Division; in the world of the virtuous bassists, I quite enjoy Tony Levin, Chris Squire, and John Wetton. I enjoy the punk rock, the post punk rock, and the prog all at the same time!).

I'm in no way, shape, or form a trained musician, and have been teaching myself to play for the last decade, and can play well enough to, like, have a janky garage band with my neighbors, play with my high school students once and a while, and play for a local rock-church choir a couple times a year.

I had the opportunity to take a bass "lesson" from Tony Levin recently, in which he said:

"Huh. Well, your technique is horrible. But you can keep time, so that's good!"

I hold that deep in my heart :-)
