Fist was- The Ox - from hearing him on AM radio with the Who in the 60's.
Second- Glenn Hughes - in Trapeze and Deep Purple- during the Hippie daze in the 70's.
Third - Jaco- after hearing him in the 70's and 80's then taking up Jazz in the 90's.

I think we know who Oxfan will pick but I'm sure there were others for him
and....what about Brother Dave and the rest of you fine gentlemen ? :D 8)

The radio, and their albums. But seeing them live, really put the hit in me from these three.

Jack Bruce - Cream

Mark Andes - Spirit

Felix Pappalardi - Mountain

In chronological order:

John Entwistle - The man got me interested in the bass. The solo from "My Generation" is still the coolest thing I've ever heard.
Jack Bruce - I got into/am still in a blues phase. Jack's approach to the bass as a lead instrument got me to rethink my role in bands.
Berry Oakley - These days, he probably shows through in my playing the most. I like his subtle melodic runs and his ability to fit in and jam with many musicians.

1. John Entwistle
2. John Paul Jones
3. Jack Bruce

Honorable mention: Just in the past few years I have grown to highly respect Paul McCartney but I can't honestly say he influenced me.

JPJ maybe should be #1 because he is like two different influences with his Motown, blues and pop background prior to getting the Led out.

Interesting how often John Entwhistle is showing up. Definitely a player of the first magnitude.

It is really tough to narrow it down to just three since not all of my influences were primarily or solely electric. After reevaluating for a few days the three are James Jamerson, Duck Dunn & Carol Kaye. The same three as 30 years ago.

Other influences at one time or another include Ray Brown, John Entwhistle, Noel Redding, Jack Bruce, Paul McCartney, Bill Black, John Lodge, Jack Casady, Timothy B. Schmidt, Bill Laswell, Joseph Lucky Scott, Roger Waters, Berry Oakley, Roger Glover, Doug Wimbish, Leland Sklar, Pino Palladino, Jeff Berlin, Aston Barrett, Anthony Jackson, Louis Satterfield, Charlie Mingus, Nathan East, Tommy Cogbill, Stu Hamm, Randy Meisner, Bootsy Collins, Larry Graham Jr., Jaco Pastorius, Mike Leech, Stanly Clarke, Chris Squire, Billy Sheehan, Tony Levin, Steve Harris, Bernard Edwards, Les Claypool, John Paul Jones, Victor Wooten, Stu Cook, Flea, John Taylor, Geddy Lee, Harry Dailey, Chas Chandler and others. It was hard to narrow it down and the ones in this paragraph, in no particular order, were and continue to be influential in their own ways as I admire them all and will stop whatever I'm doing to listen. But many of these play in styles so different from mine now or ever that I can say some influence might have crept in, but it is not as perceptible or tangible in how things turned out as the first three.

I sound absolutely nothing like Kaye either, but what I learned from her about being myself and playing up my innate proclivity to rhythmic expression was of incalculable value to having what little success I've had and was perhaps the greatest thing I ever learned. It was a revelation and somewhat of a break through. "Be yourself!"

From Duck Dunn I learned that sometimes it is better to leave space for the other artists to work within, which was an almost equally valuable lesson. "Every song doesn't need a bass solo." Others in the second paragraph obviously demonstrate the same wisdom like Pino or Dailey or Sklar or Cook, while others went in the other direction. Not saying that was the wrong direction for them to go so long as they are being themselves and mostly they were. I think Harry Dailey might be the most underrated electric bassist on the "also rans" list. (He was longtime studio and touring bassist with Jimmy Buffett & co-wrote "Volcano". Dailey was just a good solid creative player. Also under rated are James Cogbill and Mike Leech, two ace Memphis players who nobody ever names on any list of great players, but that I have a deep respect for their recorded works decades after the fact.)

From James Jamerson I am still learning, many years after his passing. There is such force and art in Jamerson's body of work that it bewilders me even today and likely always will. I don't think we'll ever see another Jamerson, but we'll see legions of players for decades still to come who will put him high on their influence list.

Flea- his manic, bombastic style that showed evolution throughout his career really helped show me see so many styles when my teenage brain was so narrow in its tastes.

Steve Harris- 'Arry cuts through like a knife, driving the rhythm and pushing up your heart rate. He grabs your ear and holds onto it hitting everything that needs to be hit to evoke that image being presented by the song. Song about a doomed cavalry charge? Lets gallop through 5 minutes at a joint wrecking bpm. Song about landing the beaches at Normandy? He helps the band create a very tense buildup that releases like the crash of the landing craft's ramp. All those examples taught me the importance of understanding how you need to work for the band, not yourself.

The third one depends on who I put on the iPod for the drive to work.

There are so many, but I will play by the rules, limit it to three, had a real long hard think about this and it would have to be,

JJ Burnel
Norman Watt-Roy.

picking three is a bit difficult - mine all came from back when I was younger. I don't know that once a player gets older in his craft that he has a lot of influences still. I don't. I actually try to play like me-- or what I mean is I try to play to the music. I don't identify so much with my playing as to compare it to my influences.

I could never play as good as those I looked up to when I started out on bass. Maybe that's where "influence" comes from? I wished I could play that good. I probably still can't.

Many others influenced me later on, but those were my influences in my formative years.
