I have a 77/78 chart somewhere. Not at home right now. Will look for it.

I'd say Oly, Black, and Burst are definites for 77/78. Also, I believe 77/78 was where we got Antigua. (my personal fav) I've seen Walnut 79's, but not sure if that was the first year. I believe there may have been a "natural" in the 70's. Not sure on the exact year. Also, I know the "rootbeer" was in there somewhere, but I'm thinking 76 for some reason. Can't wait to see what BD comes up with! My favorite era of basses, and this discussion is making me miss my 78 really bad right now. :(

Sorry I just found the other charts I had and found 1967, not 1977. I will scan and upload them to my site shortly.

I will add that I'm pretty sure the first bass I ever played was a 78. It was natural. Maple neck. Tort guard. Bridge and pick up covers. Played and sounded great. I though it was ugly as hell, though. I still don't care for "natural" basses. Though I do think it looks better on a J with blocks and matching guard. (black or white) Why that is I don't know. :?

I never cared that much for natural finishes either. In December I ordered a Squire VM J V to use as a backup and natural is the only option. It's set up the way you described. Black block inlays and binding on the neck and a black pickguard. Kind of warming up to it.

Yup, I'm still not a fan of the finish personally, but that bass certainly makes it work and well, too. I've seen a J with the white pearl blocks and guard and that looked okay, as well.

I've no idea why the J's with the matching blocks and guards seem to work for me and the P's totally turn me off. Maybe because J's naturally have a "richer" look by design? So the plainness of the natural finish isn't quite as ...blah?

i bought it brand new in about 77/78... i think it may have been natural or a blond... for sure had a maple neck....i seem to remember the pickguard being black... all i know for sure was it came with the hard case with orange velour lining.... just taking a walk down memory lane and was hoping to find pics of the same axe....

i already came across pics of the Acoustic 150/105 rig i bought at the same time.... brought back memories....
