I have a 1961 P. Bass . Red with Tortoise shell scratch plate. Guitar has been resprayed. I wondered what this sort of instrument sells for. Any one with an idea.

It's always good to see good clear pictures first. Lot's of them. Value depends a great deal on condition, changed parts, missing parts, etc, etc.

A 61 P bass could be worth a lot with original finish. A refin will knock off some value.

All true. You will take a very substantial hit on the refinishing.

Rule of thumb: Take 50% off the book value for a refinish, then work down from there with any other dings. Pictures would help a lot, but an appraisal would do you much better. See GeorgeGruhn.com. Assuming the bass is original, with the original case, and in excellent condition for the vintage, the swing in value could be from $4500 to $11,000, where as an original piece could claim twice that.

Sometimes, with a bass this old, buyers will pay a premium as compared to the book value. Not something to be counted on, however.

1961 is getting to be a long time ago - so if your Precision is actually a '61 and you can show that if has all original parts, it can still bring a nice price even though it has been refinished.

Many people are doing legit finishes that make an old Fender bass look as original as the day it left the factory or with 50 years of wear and tear.

With the proliferation of all the reliced and fake basses created to exploit the look of an old original Precision bass, it is still nice to be able to play the real thing, refinished or not.

Good luck with your sale.

I think he meant the original poster vaporized after the initial post never to be heard from again. I sometimes call these people "Drive-By Posters."

Drive by poster. Yes, it looks that way, but I can tell you that I have recently had big problems with my account.
For about 4 months I couldn't post at all. Every time I tried to log in I was put in a loop back to the sign-in screen.

It is very frustrating to go through and I wonder if some of the drive by's are having the same issue.

BTW- I just saw a 1963 Precision with orig. finish but a swapped pickup (Dimarzio) for about $6K in the Washington D.C. area.

IMHO -That's a lot of money for a bass with a changed pickup!

I had trouble too till I put a check mark in the box marked REMEMBER ME or KEEP ME LOGGED IN or whatever it says. That worked and I've not had trouble since. I just checked and don't see that box anymore on the login page.

I think that was high too, by about 1800 to 2500.
