I am probably going to buy a 74 pbass this evening. It was recently listed on eBay at this link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1974-Fender-Fre ... 3380d5bdc5

For it to be legit, the body has to be solid walnut. I have never seen walnut before so this is beyond my expertise. I will have a return policy in force but I don't want the hassle if I can make that determination now.

I'm thinking it's good. Doesn't look like any of the woods I am familiar with. Opinions please.

Thanks.

walnut is a brownish color- not blonde. I've seen a couple walnut fretless 70's era and they had a dark finish and black p guards.

Thanks for that input! I have reached a tentative agreement with the seller but there are still details to work out - so your comment was timely. Thanks again.

+1!

The body was made from solid swamp ash, not walnut. This P-Bass features a natural finish.

CBS did a couple of guitars and basses in Mocha Brown featuring walnut-stained alder bodies.

The Walnut Precisions didn't came into surface until the early 1980s.

Yup! Ash it is! I really appreciate you all helping me out while I was away from home.

The natural walnut was first presented in 1973 and ran through 1979. It has a stronger grain, which is what kind of threw me. But all the walnut basses had a darker finish to them as stroker pointed out, and the few samples I have been able to dig up in the past hour all had the black pickguard, too. Good call.

The bass is on its way from Texas to Florida.

Thanks again.

It's here, and in outstanding condition. It had been advertised as near mint....that was true. A little buzz on the D, from 7 up, but other than needed work on that, I cannot find a darn thing wrong with it.

And in this day and age, for a guy to send me his bass only on my word that I would send him a check if it checked out - gives you hope there are still some honest people out there. To bad there are enough jerks to make up for it.

Wow man. That thing is spankin' new...even the case.

I've never tried a maple board fretless. I think Jaco used one on the Live in Italy...maybe.
