When I'm learning a song, I'll listen to it over and over. Usually once i "hear" it, it's not too difficult to play it.

My song is 5:15 by The Who, for some strange reason I can never get it completely right every time.

This is a good topic OX. I find some of The Beatles songs, amongst others, sound easy, but are enough to drive me crazy on parts of them.

Thanks Mr. Nylon.

When I first started playing many years ago, The Beatles intimidated the hell out of me, now, no big deal. There's just something about 5:15 that drives me crazy. I've nailed it, then lose it. (insert maniacal scream here)

My honor Mr. OX.
I think you and myself have been cooking on bass for about the same time since back then. 1968-1969? A lot of water under the bridge Pardoner.

The theme song to the TV show Barney Miller and also Zeppelin's Ramble On both took me an awful lot of practice to get them right back in the day. They both have these short quick runs down and that was where I had to keep practicing.

This new young band I'm in now has also been challenging for me. Not the playing part though. I didn't know any of the songs so I've had to teach myself how to play them and it appears these song writers delight in assembling song structures that are difficult to remember. I am slowly committing them to memory but it hasn't been easy.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Yes .......... 5:15 by The Who was one that gave me trouble back in the day when I was starting out as did "Long Distance Runaround" & Roundabout from Yes' Fragile album....

A friend of mine came up with this 25 minute collection of material about ten years ago. I came up with the beginning riff and he just went nuts with the rest of the piece(I think I helped with some ideas for drum programming).

It took a while to learn...even longer to contribute to for a recording.

Good question. Hard to remember the early days. I remember Ticket to Ride was hard on me. Ramble on, yeah that was tough too.

The fingers aren't as nimble as they used to be. Even after popping a couple Aleve some of the newer, more challenging bass lines evade me, speed wise.

To get it fast like Jaco did it takes a long time- for me anyway-- I got about half way thru the song. I went to band practice and played it for the guys. They could have cared less. That pretty much discouraged me. I never played them stuff I'd learn at home again. I'm not in that band anymore anyway. Good.

I learn this kind of music for myself knowing that I'll never play it live,.... for me it's a feeling of a accomplishment & every time I reach a plateau where I've learned something that was a challenge it ends up influencing my bass playing,........I've been playing for 35yrs & I'm of the mind set that I need to keep picking up things & keep learning even though I'll always play in classic rock bands.. :)

All of the tough ones are with bands that far out shined anyone we could play with. I gave up on trying to find the "right" band a long time ago. When i really want to work on something difficult, I just go it alone.

Same thing here. There are plenty of lead players around. Time was a issue, and playing what the songs I liked playing.

Recently, I mentiioned one over at the 'sabrelanesconservatory' forum that is a real 'stretch' for me. As most persons here know, I had a childhood playground injury to my left arm in 1958 that resulted in low dexterity to the last two fingers. I had to learn to play bass with only two fully operational fingers on my left hand, so moving quickly from fret to fret with those two fingers is part of my style along with using GHS M3050 flatwounds. One song that I had trouble with early on was the Bachman Turner Overdrive - "Takin' Care of Business". I had to reach 5 frets from my anchor point and while it is no big deal these days, it was back in 1974.
