Hi,

I'm Patrick and live in Great Britain...

I recently bought a Custom Shop 1994 P51 that has a few strange features...

It came on its own, no case, no info or candy... 1992 body, 1994 neck. It was bought second hand from a guitar shop in California around 2000, that's the extent of what I know...

So, I'm trying to find a bit more on this guitar, so would welcome info or contacts from people familiar with the Fender set up at that time...

Thanks in advance, Patrick

That's one badazz bass.

The early 90's was a great time period for the Custom Shop.

What is and where is the serial number? i don't see it on the headstock or neckplate, is it on the bridge? You can replace the last few numbers with "xxx' if you like.

Is this the Gary Day / Morrissey bass? If so, I saw this on the UKs Basschat recently. Really interesting hybrid. There seems to be a suggestion that something very like this was available as a mass produced CS model in the 1990's, although they supposedly had concentric Vol/Tone knobs whereas yours doesn't (presumably its vol/vol only?).

See this thread for details of the above CS model: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f8/fender ... ss-674608/

As brotherdave said, a serial no. would also help a lot in IDing this. Whatever its provenance, its a beauty!

Yes Mickster, that's the one... As you've seen, it was advertized with a Badass Bass III bridge but the owner still had the original bits... Got it away from eBay, did go and pick it up meself... And yes, it's 2 volume pots, there's no tone pot...

1st, neck and body markings:

Now, after getting this guitar and looking at it proper, it appears to me some bits are much older on it than when it was built, 1992 to 1994.

The ferrules on the back are nickel plated and have lost most of it. Then, what covers the bridge is actually a pick up cover, mounted upside down. The guitar body has indent marks from its edges, so it's been there a long time...

Lastly, LOL, Brotherdave, cause if I put xxx for the serial stamped on the bridge, you won't see much since it's 4 digits and the 1st one is a zero... Like the cover, it looks old, has been repolished/rechromed, probably when the guitar was built... Still, this 0293 is the only serial on this bass, so it is its serial...

So, really early bits still lying about the factory in 1994 and made into a show guitar, or did a guy came to the Custom Shop with these salvaged bits and had them fitted into a new bass??? That what I'm trying to find out...

Bye for now, Patrick

True and I thought about that but it isn't one of the Anniversary basses. I also thought it might have influenced that Anniversary model. The CS markings and dates look genuine. That is an oddball serial but that is also Herb Gastelum's stamp so it is real. The bridge cover looks upside down. hmmmm.

Thanks for the name, I've tried other combinations on google, thought the S was a B, did not bring anything!!!

So that's one lead to follow... Does Herb still works in the Custom Shop?

And the cover is not a bridge cover, its a single pickup cover mounted upside down and obviously lower down!!!

There are traces of rust on it in the places they couldn't repolish it proper, on the side and underneath.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not that used to old guitar parts but I've spent a lifetime with old motorcycles parts, these parts I've described don't look one yoya like modern parts...

So long, Patrick

I'm sort of surprised about that. Herbert (Herbie) Gastelum has been at Fender longer than most anyone except Abigail Ybarra. For a while in the 70's it seems about every neck you looked at was either Torres or Gastelum. He was one of the first Fender craftspeople moved to the Custom Shop and his specialty was always neck work. Last I heard he was still there, but that was a while back. You could post in the Custom Shop section of the forum and ask Mike Eldred. He'll know.

Unfortunately Brad has closed the Eldred section.

Use the "Let's Talk Custom Shop" discussion lounge instead.
