Played my first gig tonight with my new 2012 American Standard Precision V. Man I loved it it. Big full sound. Plenty of bottom and every note cut through the the mix nice and clear, but not over bearing. You not only could hear the bass, but you could feel it as well.
Had several people compliment me on it's looks, Candy Cola with a maple neck. I also changed the white pg out with a white pearl.
The sound man loved it as well as all the guys in the band.
I've played active Jazz 5 strings for over 20 years. Glad I'm back with a passive p-bass now.

Glad to hear you've FINALLY had some good luck. Your new baby is really stunning. I never liked pearl pickguards until I saw your's, it really compliments the Candy Cola and maple neck. all round, you got the best of everything. Where did you get it, again?

Thanks oxfan. I couldn't be happier with this bass. Just got home from the second night of our weekend gig. The bass played and sounded to me even better than it did last night. Again tonight I received several compliments on it's sound and looks.
I bought it from Sam Ash. The local Fender dealer couldn't get the Candy Cola since it has been discontinued. They recommended Sam Ash. I called them up and asked what their bottom dollar would be. He said they would knock off $200 and sold it to me for $1,149.99. They also had free 2 day delivery.

Tamm75, here's a link to a thread with pics I started when I first received the bass. Page 2 has pics with the pearl pg.

chromeface, I'll see if I can get a youtube of me playing the bass posted sometime in the next week or two. I might be a little too busy this week to do it. We'll be preparing for one of our biggest gigs this coming weekend. The place holds 800 people and will be packed out Friday and Saturday night. The dance floor is 4,000 sq feet, nearly the size of a basketball court. We're excited about this gig and will probably put in an extra rehearsal or two this week.

Are you actually plan using the 4-string P for certain songs?

I actually thought about it, but I decided to just keep it retired from live gigs. It's done it's share of Oklahoma honky tonk gigs. I did use it as my main bass for over 10 years. Besides, I don't want to run the risk of something bad happening to it. Mainly because of it's sentimental value to me. I pull it out at the house and play it every now and then.
I do take the Squier VM Jazz V as a backup, but only use it if I need to.

Since you've already a 5-string Custom Shop J-Bass in your arsenal and the old 1978 P-Bass is too valuable to risk the road, did you ever thinked about the idea of getting a meticulous replica of your battered old axe in the future? (a masterbuilt '78 P-Bass Relic, for example).

It's should be obvious to everyone that I think Fender makes great basses and the CS one's are fantastic. But what I'm personally experiencing with my CS bass has me sworn off of them.
After owning the CS bass less than a year I found several places on the neck binding that was delaminating. I contacted Fender Custom Care and they had me send the bass to a tech In Tulsa for evaluation. That's when I purchased the Squier VM V as a back up bass.
The picture below shows one of the areas. This is located on the top of the neck at the 9th fret. Notice the damage areas on either side of the fret, but the binding covering the fret itself is undamaged. There are about 7 areas in all located on the top and bottom of the neck varying in size.
Image
The tech in Tulsa recommended the bass be sent to Corona. The custom shop builders there said they weren't sure what caused the delamination, probably some type of wear and tear, but they were sure it wasn't due to materials or workmanship and denied the repair under warranty. I asked how much they would charge me for the repair work and I was told the neck could be stripped and refinished, but the custom shop isn't set up for repair work and if my issues had been covered under warranty they would build a new neck, not repair the the damaged one.
When I received the bass back, the case was damaged, the G string tuner was broke and there were two small blemish issues that were definitely not there before. The outside shipping box showed no sign of any damage.
Notice the nail sticking out of the case. This is the way I received it. This nail fastens to a wood block inside the storage pocket in the case. It had been dropped with enough force that the nail popped out. The case was hard to close and there was a good 1/4 inch gap on the right when the case was closed without a bass in it. The latch on that side was very hard to operate. The case was in great condition other than a few small tears in the tolex when I shipped the bass. This is probably when the tuning key broke and the two damaged areas on the bass happened.

I contacted Custom Care again and they sent me a new case and a new tuner. They also asked that I send the bass back to them to evaluate the 2 small damaged areas.
This is a very small nick on the headstock near the broken tuner. I'm positive it wasn't there before I shipped the bass to Fender.
Image
This is a small smudge place in the finish near the input jack. Sorry about the poor pic quality. It's small, but very easy to see in person. When rubbing my finger over the area I could feel a slight indention. This area lined up perfectly with the metal case hinge present behind the inner lining of the case. I'm also positive this damaged area wasn't present on the bass when I shipped it to Fender.
Image
There were a couple of other small damaged areas on the bass that I hadn't noticed before, but I didn't mention them to Fender because I couldn't see how they could have been caused with the bass being dropped.
I know these areas are very insignificant and maybe I'm being a little petty contacting Fender about them.......and maybe I am a little upset at my original claim being denied, but these damaged areas happened while the bass was in Fenders care.
The custom shop had me ship the bass back to them in the damaged case after I drove the nail back in. After the bass arrived I was contacted and told they would "repair" the 2 areas since they "may" have occured when the other damaged happened. I was also informed that the new tuning key I had installed was broke when they received the bass. Hopefully there wasn't any addtional damage to the bass.
I was contacted by Custom Care on a friday, March 8th, that the bass was finished and would be shipped by next day air on monday, March 11th. They wanted to make sure someone would be home on tuesday to sign for it. I was also told that they were shipping the bass without the G string tuner installed....just in case. They are also sending a set of strings for my troubles. Back in December they did send me a mug and 2 sets of strings. I let them know that my wife and I would be at work that day and asked if they could ship it so it would arrive on friday, March 15th. I was told that the bass would be shipped on thursday and I would receive it on that friday. I was home most of the day and my wife was home all day.....no bass. I wasn't given a tracking number so I'm not sure where it is. It probably has spent the weekend in back of a truck in the FedEx parking lot.....just my speculation.
So with all I have experienced with this CS bass and considering the amount of money I paid for it, I've determined they're not worth it. I am not a collector....I purchase basses to play. I expect them to show some true road worn in time, just not what I'm experiencing with this bass in less than a year. I also feel a little insulted by the Custom Shop when they have hinted in their conversations with me that the damage is my fault. I can promise you I haven't banged that neck on anything nor have I done anything to cause the neck delamination. The small issues aren't something that "may" have happened when the bass was dropped.
I've decided to retire the bass from live gigs to avoid any further damage. I will play it every now and then around the house and maybe gig with it on special occasions.
That's why I purchased the P5. I still prefer a Fender bass over any other, just don't want to pay out big dollars for a bass that I feel the warranty doesn't match up with. I now have 5 string that is as simple as as a good quality bass can be and still deliver a great sound. So far I'm very happy with my decision.
Oh yeah, I have since named the CS bass the "She Devil".......she lures you in with her great looks and sultry voice......then puts you through hell. :D

I just bought a used 2009 P5 in sunburst.
It sounds sweet and I love the low B string.

I haven't gigged with it yet but it will get some use.
