Really?? Brother Dave; Special order parts would be the parts that may or may not be in stock, there for they may have to be made to fit the order. Spare parts are all the pots, switches, input jacks that are in the bins in the warehouses that are used in the MASS PRODUCTION of ALL instruments, including your Fender Guitars. You Sir, aren't the only one who reads about the old glorious Fender days and know darn well what I meant. It was my opinion that half the beginning post got cut off, if you want a pissing contest please "Bring It"!!!!

I merely wanted a clarification on what you meant by the expression "spare parts" in your post which reads, "...Manufacturing differences nadda they were using spare parts on there builds."

Spare parts has sort of a negative connotation to me, as one could interpreted it to mean leftover parts. Fender CBS certainly was not above taking leftover parts and refitting them for another use, such as the SWINGER/MUSICLANDER/ARROW guitar bodies that were cut down from the surplus of failed Bass V model bodes. But almost without exception, even until the last day at Fullerton, Precision Basses were built according to the specification sheet using stock parts. Stock parts is a better way to put it maybe.

If you feel your post was mis-posted you can edit it.

Brother Dave, you're correct, I answered in anger and I'm sorry. I had spoken with Fender a couple of times, example why an 80 jazz had 78 pots. The answer was they were using parts up that were in the factory. So Peace to you! Don

Well....NBD!
Pulled the trigger and im happier than heck! She has the darkest fingerboard i have seen on a P...all orig parts too. Didnt get the orig case :( , but i have seen lots of them for sale.
Best part of this bass so far is the neck/playability. Plays like absolute butter, with barely an effort.
Neck width at nut is 1.552"
Tnx for everyones help. Looks great beside the '71

it still to me would be how it feels and plays. Manufacturing differences nadda they were using spare parts on there builds. I have a 72 with a factory A neck. I have a jazz but always come back to my pbass. Good luck, either can't go wrong.

They were not using spare parts. The P-Bass with the "A" width neck was obviously special ordered like that.

Ok so since my P width at nut is 1.552" would it be a rare "A"

I know around this build time that the "green" looking pen writing on the necks are very hard to read.

My '71 Jazz neck is about .001" under 1.500"

I'm not an expert, but I would say "yes".

Jazzy1971 you are one lucky man, that is a mighty fine pair you have there, two of the nicest looking sunburst finishes I have seen for a long time, rock on!
