Ok, so i have some good Jazz exp and knowledge but im in the market for a P Bass.

I am looking at a all orig 1970 P Bass with Rosewood board and Sunburst.

Also looking at a all orig 1972 P Bass with Rosewood board and Sunburst.

Was wondering from a manufacturing point of view is there anything different or a "transition" point difference here at all?

Thanks in advance for your help!

If I were me I'd go for the 70. I think the Sunburst color is slightly different. I'm sure there are a few more details-- Bro Dave knows.

I will also be interested in seeing Brother Dave's answer. I can only tell you that in Sunburst finish, the 70 is worth about $400 more than the same in 72, which might factor into your decision. They both cost $293.50 new. Wow. I know changes were made in 74, but I think most of the bass engineering time in 70-72 was spent on the Telecaster, which was going through huge changes.

As an aside, the Telecaster was an excellent bass those years also.

I think the lighting and the obviously better camera in the one pic is making the burst look "more" different than the other.

The 70 has lots of finish checking and everything is included and original.

The 72 has no checking but has a buckle mark on the back of about 2"x1.5" and its all the way down to the bare wood. But basically MINT everywhere else. This bass comes with ALL of the orig case candy and hang tags...including the rare leather strap.

The seller of the '72 wants about $1200 more than the seller of the '70

Kinda leaning towards the 70

The older SB finish yellow color was a kind of almost green hue deal. It was different I'm pretty sure. I don't have my book up here in my comp room but I'll try to find it. I've seen those green looking sunbursts before and I'm sure it was on some of the older ones. Late 60's or maybe earlier --.

I'd lean on the 70 also- it's prob always going to fetch a little more plus it's a cool bass.

BTW- that SB color would be a little Sap Green with some Naples Yellow and some Cadmium Yellow Medium- maybe a little Burnt Umber or Mars Brown...... that's the color match- you have to mix it right though !!!

$1200 is a big difference, half the 72's value. I used Vintage Guitar Magazine 2013 Price Guide for these figures.

Value is for bass w/case, bass in excellent condition.

1970 Sunburst, low $2800 - high $3400
1972 Sunburst, low $2400 - high $3000

Sunburst finishes were very popular - probably because they were very cool, but it has resulted in a lower value than the other P colors from the same years.

Hope this helps.

It sounds like there is a time crunch on these sales, but hopefully you can hang on for Brother Dave's insight. If I had to go without his knowledge, I would do the 70 also.

Thanks for your replies so far!...leaning even more to the '70 since I will probably be able to score it for $2300!

No time crunch from either guy since the interest was them replying to my local wanted ad!

Going to see the '70 on tues and I'm bringing. $2500

Fingers crossed

I don't care for the extra shiney finish on a Fender much either. You need a really pretty piece of wood for that much gloss.

Gloss over ash looks great, for instance.

There is very little difference between them in materials, electronics or design. If possible to play them both, buy the one that plays better. As a value, the 1970 is the better one. It is worth more. Finish checking isn't a big deal. Originality plays a large part here. If one has any non-original parts then buy the other one.

it still to me would be how it feels and plays. Manufacturing differences nadda they were using spare parts on there builds. I have a 72 with a factory A neck. I have a jazz but always come back to my pbass. Good luck, either can't go wrong.

They were not using spare parts. The P-Bass with the "A" width neck was obviously special ordered like that.

Yes brother Dave I know my A neck was a special order, with all due respect. My answer was to the difference between the Pbasses mentioned above. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

OK, please explain to me the difference between parts and "spare parts?"

Really?? Brother Dave; Special order parts would be the parts that may or may not be in stock, there for they may have to be made to fit the order. Spare parts are all the pots, switches, input jacks that are in the bins in the warehouses that are used in the MASS PRODUCTION of ALL instruments, including your Fender Guitars. You Sir, aren't the only one who reads about the old glorious Fender days and know darn well what I meant. It was my opinion that half the beginning post got cut off, if you want a pissing contest please "Bring It"!!!!
