In the studio I am much more particular about the "finer touches". Precisely how long I might hold a note, the levels of my dynamics, ect. The engineer we just worked with commented on my professionalism. All my band mates took forever and tons of takes to nail down their parts on the studio half of our upcoming Ep and their playing was "hap hazzard" in his words. I came in and knocked out both songs in 20 minutes. I could have gotten away with two takes for both if I wanted, but one got an extra because I "heard" some fine tuning in there I wanted to do. Fine tuning that I could never really hear in the live mix. In the verses I was playing half notes for the 1 in each measure. However, when listening to the isolated drum track and the way it was balanced I made sure to go back and change those half notes to quarter notes with rests following to bring out the snare more in the recording to give it a little more swing. A very rudementary trick. However, we just got our final mixes for the Ep and are going to be sending them off for duplication once we get our artwork done. The proof was definitely in the pudding, and it was well worth the extra 4 minutes to lay the down one more time.

I had two doughnuts a little while ago-- Krispy Kream--- but any way-- King of Pizzain- obviously you did a great job in the studio. You took the time to get it right. You used your experience and expertise to make the music sound as professionally done as possible. You understand the job at hand and proved to those around you that you are the man . WELL GUESS WHAT??? You're a freakin' bass player dude.. I would expect nothing less what-so- ever--!!!!!!!! NOW PASS ME THE DOUGHNUTS!!!!!! :D

You mustn't answer this!

You can't state what is written below in answer to the question.

The questioner could jump to conclusions concerning your immodesty and probably make entirely false and erroneous judgements about you.

But the simplest, most direct and truthful answer to this question is that the single most important factor in creating the Sound a Player is getting, is actually the Player themselves.

In fact, I believe the "Spirit of the Sound", its "Essential Essence" actually originates from Deep Within the Player, and that what you Hear, the "Vibrations Created by Moving Air" as the Strings are Struck, Attacked, Plucked or Caressed is not a "Cause", but really an "Effect".

The "Cause" is actually Inside the Players Spirit, and the "Effect", the Sound you Hear is really but an Outward Expression of an Inward Reality and Feeling that the Player has towards the Music, which is in truth, the Sum of a Whole Lifetime of Emotion, Personal Experience, Accrued Technical Prowess and a Direct Result of Who they Have Worked With and been Exposed to and Influenced By. Its Their Life Story in Single Notes.

But the Salient Point is, it's the Person Holding and Playing the Instrument and Contributes Most to the Sound you Hear.

They are The Single Most Important Thing In Getting That Sound!

There are of course, many, many other contributory factors.

Fingers, Picks, Strings, Pickups, Wood, On Board Electronics, (Passive or Active) Bass Instrument, Amplifier, E.Q. Settings, Speaker & Cabinet, Direct Injection Box, Pre- Amp and so forth.

And we could enlarge and amplify detail to the point, where certainly I could point where the UTC Transformer Used in a Direct Injection Box makes a tremendous contribution to the Best Quality of Bass Tone.

Many decades ago indeed, I was stood in a Music Shop.

It was by far the Largest in the Area, owned by a friend of mine which was why I was there, when a scruffy American Guy walked in, obviously a traveller, with a back pack on.

He walked around the Display of Guitars and finally lifted the Cheapest, Worst Playing Guitar off the wall. It had an Action that was "Difficult" and Strings that were Cheap, and the Wood this Very Early Chinese Guitar was made from wouldn't have been considered good enough to fabricate a Packing Case in this Country.

He Laid the Guitar on his Lap, pulled a Steel out of his pocket, and proceeded with a Master Class Display of Virtuoso Performance, that was nothing short of Breathtakingly Stunning. It's strange how even if you give a Cheap Guitar to a Great and Famous Player, they still get "Their Signature Tone" even when they are using different or less than their "Ideal Equipment".

Their Choice Equipment, simply Dials into ever more Precise Focus, Sophisticatedly Honing the Class and Quality, of what is in actual fact, Already There in a Complete Form, but in a Rawer Form.

It's this Observation that has led me to the Conclusion that "The Player" is "The Single Most Important Thing In Getting That Sound!"

I think Pink Panther nailed it!

A great player will sound great even on cheap equipment!

The sound is in your hands. Take care of them and how you use them.
Don't take unnecessary risks with your hands, like around power tools or saws.

I am finding that I can get my sound out of a cheap squire bass or a Fender select.
Its all in the hands.

P.S. Sound men can ruin any band mix. Don't trust them or what they give you in the monitors.

I just had another bad experience with an unqualified Sound man. It really sucks for the band.
