I think it's all connected,.......it starts in your heart & mind then goes to the hands & your technique & feel,... & then through your bass & your amp,....in the end though it's all in the hands & your technique that will dictate your overall style,
Interesting enough (case in point) I was watching a Rush documentary last night on the making of their
2007 CD Snakes & Arrows & there's a short bit where Geddy Lee is Jamming away on a Custom Shop Jaco Fretless bass that Fender had just given him.
Listening to him jam away on this bass he sounded like Geddy Lee playing a Jaco fretless .....he didn't sound like Jaco,... just like Jaco could pick up any bass & sound like Jaco....... it's the Heart, mind, technique,& hands... :)

Maybe I'm too old or just being anal, but I hate playing too loud for the venue. It's not professional!

Any band I've ever been in we always play at a level that fills the room from front to back but doesn't make people's ears bleed. I have something I always step up to the mic and say whenever we get that small percentage of people who say we're too loud.

"If we're too loud then you're too old."

LOL ! I just MIGHT be guilty as charged then.
And you kids keep offa my lawn too!!

I wanted to bring this one back because it had some really good posts. The guys here really understand the dynamics of playing bass in a band. The bassists here who haven't been playing long can learn a lot from this topic because there are guys on here who have been playing a long time. Experience is a good teacher.

Another thing- in this topic the discussion deals with live performance mostly. I find that I play a little differently in the studio. I don't know if that's bad or what. I'm always thinking less is more when recording and I tend to play a little different style. That is of course unless the engineer notices and tells me to hammer down more.

What do you guys do differently as far as playing dynamics in the studio? I pay more attention in the studio to not make a note louder than the other ones-

Regardless of anything else said here, and with all due respect, "that" sound comes from the person playing...period.

I'll agree to just about everything already said. In my case, i've found that keeping everything as uncomplicated as possible makes all the difference.

When you say you play differently in the studio, are you referring to the sombrero and cape? I thought that was a one time thing.

As of late I've changed my perspective as far as playing. just running through one of several amps, no effects, not even the Bassdriver. Reflecting on what I've learned, all the things I.ve done have made a whole different outlook.

Time spent learning always benefits.

Technique goes a long way, ........ I spend a lot of time practicing through my amp clean (no effects) I also play my Ibanez acoustic bass a lot .......you gotta hear what you're doing to improve.

I think I play differently in the studio. I figure it's because I can hear myself so much better than many live gigs. I play harder in live gigs when I can't hear myself, and I guess that's become part of my style. In the studio you can hear yourself right where you want to be in the mix and I get inspired by that.

Makes sense to me.
I was recording the other day with our singer running the board. He kept wanting me to dig into it more... hit the strings harder... I'm not sure I did that well enough. It's a ballad - I just couldn't make myself play real hard in a ballad. IMO the song called for basic one note 4/4 style less is more. I was overdubbing on top of the original bass track by a different bassist. We decided to re- do the whole song. It is worth re -doing. I think it's a good tune. It takes tons of time to record . I know people who just don't have the attention span to do recording to actually get it done the right way----and there IS a right way. Listen to the Eagles for example. There stuff is like ..perfect as far as the recording goes. They are not my fave band but they sure have some awesome recordings---all of them-- even the solo albums.
