I did this before, and then I found out, the person who installed the pickup, cut the body the wrong way. The hole wasn't straight, and when i went to resale this bass, the salesperson pointed this out to me! I was hot, I couldn't believe, this person did this to me! What makes it so bad is, it was a 1975 Natural P-bass, that this person ruined, in the sense of the word. As Im writing this, I got a thought, instead of carving up a bass(I love P-basses) just get a cheaper Jazz, as a stand by, if I want some more added pop :D Answers are welcomed here

Instead of taking your chances with someone routing out a spot for a J pickup on your bass, you could get one of the Deluxe (or Special) P's. There is a Squier version too with passive electronics if memory serves.

When I saw the topic title, I was thinking, only if you trust yourself or the tech routing the body for the pickups. You can't really be upset with the work, if you didn't notice it yourself before selling it. A lot of people can cut your bass up, but not many can do it correctly. I go with Edro's advice on this one, unless you really trust the guy doing the work.
