I have a MIM precision bass that was bought new in May of 2011 that has developed what looks to be a finish problem along the upper seam of the tension rod cover strip. The finish started flaking off about 6 months ago up around the third fret area and now runs down to the eleventh fret area and appears to be ready to continue down. The neck has only required a very minor tension rod adjustment that was done just a week ago (less than 1/8th turn). The bass stays in tune, and has not left the house. Any ideas as to what may be going on.

This is my first post so I hope the link to the pictures works.

Looks as if the truss rod is trying to push the insert out, doesn't it?

My guess is that they were too conservative with the glue.

That would be my guess too.

Since you bought this new from a Fender dealer the dealer needs to do an evaluation as this might be an issue covered under the warranty. Might wind up replacing the neck which is what probably needs to happen. It isn't going to get "better" by itself at any rate.

Thanks for the comments. I thought something moving might be the underlying problem. Time to contact the dealer.

So, the replacement neck is finally here from Fender so the wait is over. I wonder if a pup upgrade would be a good idea. I am still in the just practicing(rock, classic rock), wanabe a bass player stage so I am not specifically looking for a particular sound at this point. What about pups from an american standard P, or maybe the SD SCPB3 with the orange drop mylar cap upgrade.

The American Standard Precision Bass IV features a Custom Shop '60s split-coil humbucker, which is not available as a separate accessory.

The SCPB3 will not fit in your axe. It's a single coil replacement pickup for '51-style P-Basses.

The Basslines SPB3 is a good choice for rock and classic rock.

The quarter-inch diameter pole pieces expand the magnetic field and extend the frequency ranges for fat, full, punchy sound with tremendous mid-range presence and maximum output. Though often used for heavy rock tones, this pickup gives amazing tonal versatility to a single pickup instrument making this the most popular Basslines pickup. Includes logo covers.

The SPB3 is a favorite of artists such as Roger Waters, Steve Harris and Mark Hoppus to name a few. It would suit your playing style perfectly.

I wouldn't do anything with the pups. They are more than adequate, and as you mention you are just finding your way, should be no problem. Glad to hear the neck issue was handled satisfactorily, case closed.
