Have any of you guys come across the haynes manual by P Balmer for Fender Bass? I got one a while back and it has certainly got some good tips in it, has helped me with the little things, which I do take nice and slowly, luckily the guy I use sets my gear up exactly how I want it.

Now BMW if you lived closer

I do all my own work on my guitars with the exception of painting. I am color blind, so I figure that i will not mess with that area  Everything else I take great pride and joy working on! Last night my band had a gig and a pretty good bass player form our city came out to hear us and was very complimentary on my bass and when he asked who did my work he was really surprised when I told him I do it. needless to say, I have a new customer! :)

I do simple set ups on my newer basses because I enjoy doing it. The vintage basses I take in to the tech because I don't want to take a chance on goofing something up. (Like when I pulled ALL the strings off my first Coronado to clean it up, before I knew it had a floating bridge...now that was a nice day.) My guy charges me between $25-$45 depending on what is needed. Money well spent. I have no complaints about his quality.

As far as refinishing is concerned, I have shopped this very recently and received quotes as low as $250 for body and neck, $150 for just the body. Gord Miller is going to do a '68 Mustang for me in Daphne Blue, body and neck. Not sure when I will see it as it hasn't even shipped to him yet, but he has my deposit and I am on the waiting list. Gord has some really solid references and was initially brought to my attention right here by Brother Dave. This job will run around $1000 and I can't wait to see the results. (You can see his price lists at gmvintagerestorations.com.) So the range in prices is quite large and I assume the quality of the workmanship is somewhat reflected in them.

I should mention that this bass was refinished once before or I wouldn't be touching it.

I do my own set ups. Not because I wouldn't want a tech to do it. Only because all the local shops in the area have guitarist techs. I like high action on my basses. Anytime I've ever tried to have a bass worked on, no matter if I told them I like high action or not. They always roll their eyes and get the strings as low as possible. I'm not going to spend money to have some idiot kid who thinks he can play guitar screw up my bass so I have to fix it. The only things I won't do on my P basses are fret and nut work, and I'd have no clue how do any finishing work if I ever needed it. Pick up and control swaps, hardware upgrades, set ups, adjustments, repairs, ect I do all myself. I find doing it makes me more in tune (ba pun, sorry :? ) with the instrument.

I'd never take a bass to the GC or Sam Asheesh that are here in my town. Too many guys in skinny jeans and jet black dyed hair. Also all those pins and studs in the face , It's hard to look at those guys and talk to them. I want to rub my own face wherever they have those things planted around the lips and nose and whatnot.
I like it when I ask them something and then tell them the answer too. It seems to turn out that way. Remember I'm talking about my city. I know there's a chance there are good set up guys at other GC's and Ashes.
