The other day, I read an forum topic about bass players that play with a pick.Their are four Fender bass players, that I really admired(to this day) that play with a pick. I will add this also, Sir Paul, wasn't a Fender player, but I must say, His bass playing has one way or another, made us Fender bass players, what we are today. :D Anyway, the first on my list, is a very cool lady, Carol Kaye. Man , is she funky? :D Every time I hear the theme from the late 60's shows, The Bill Cosby Show, Mission Impossible, and The NBC Night Mystery Show, I hear Carol funkin :D From Her, came Tiran Porter, of the Doobies fame. To see a man, sing and play with so much skill, while keeping the groove.I would say to many young bass players, listen very closely to, Listen to the Music, Long Train Runnin, and the classic, Minute by Minute. The brother has so much "soul" in his playing. Number three, Joe Osborn. First, he Had the First Fender Jazz bass, Fender made. Second, next to jack Casady, Joe Osborn had more hits than Jack. Third, Joe "picked" for so many other bass players, a person couldn't tell back then, who was the real bass player for the group, vs.,was that joe Osborn :D Lastly, this bass player is a product of Joe, Jack and Carol, Anthony jackson :!: Anthony jackson, the man who created the 5 and 6 string bass guitar. The man, who co-wrote a funk national theme, For the love of Money. The man, who first played in Philly, with the famed M.F.S.B. Then, In the demand, N.Y. Session market. Lastly, who brought Chaka Khan to the fore front :D Who got me to understand who James Jamerson really was. Anthony, what can I say more. If you're read this Anthony, I know , that was you on T.S.O.P., not The late Ronnie Baker. My Mentor, Ronnie Baker played on Love is the Message. And, Anthony, your playing on the Billy Paul's album, 360 degress of Billy Paul, Am I Black enough for you, Lets Stay together, I just love your lines , plus, on "Your Song". great bass lines. You're the Man ,Anthony. This is my list of fender bass Players 'Pickers"

When he's not playing his Peavey Zodiac DE, David Ellefson's a pretty good P-Bass picker in his own right  :

I'd love to get my hands on one of these 5 string P-Basses!

my fave would have to my Mike Dirnt. He's the guy who inspired me to play.

but I also like a local band Tokyo Police Club's Dave Monks
bass is a big part of their music, even though his lines aren't hard to play.

+2. Saw Rog at the United Center for The Dark Side of the Moon Live Tour. Sixth Row, center floor... Yeah. My concert-going experience peaked at my first real show. I am going to see Rush at the UC in another month, though...

David Gilmour may have played the more difficult basslines on their records, but he's also responsible for A Momentary Lapse of Reason, so enough said about that!

Actually, I was with a friend at Guitar Center today with what will be my future Precision Bass (black w/ maple neck, can you tell I'm a drooling fanboy? :P) and Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2 came over the loudspeakers. I played the whole damn song, and probably looked like a total fruitcake for it. At least they didn't tell me to put it away...

Tommy Shannon- He didn't use a pick 100% of the time with SRV, but did a fine job whichever technique he used.

Rick Murrell - Saw him use one for most of the songs backing Tammy Wynette on Austin City Limits. Got a nice variety of tone out of that picked P Bass too.

Tommy Caldwell (Marshall Tucker Band)- According to a few things I've read he mainly used his thumb, but in the limited footage I've seen it was a pick.

Franklin Wilkie (Marshall Tucker Band soon after Tommy's death)

I'd like to find more of the country bass pickers, either live or in the studio, because that's what I have to use most of the time now. Easier said than done, the search so far hasn't yielded many results.
