Hello all, long time lurker.

I've been GASing pretty hard for a AmStd Precision V in Oly. white. What I would really love is a matching head stock. I think that would add a touch of extra class to an already lovely bass.

Question is. . .Is that something that the vaunted Fender Custom Shop could or would handle? I do have an amazing repair/refinish shop in town that could undoubtedly strip/paint/reapply logos to the head stock nearly as well as the gentlemen and ladies in Corona, but I worry about warranty issues.

Any thoughts?

Regular P-Basses as a rule didn't get matching headstocks in the golden era.

Hey Russell,

As Brother Dave said, a matching headstock was not typical of P basses of any age except a natural finish, and I am not even sure that was available on a P.

From my standpoint as a collector, there is no upside to your idea other than that warm fuzzy feeling we get when we hold a really cool bass. I think it would be a great looking bass! If it is a bass you intend to keep forever, then go to your local shop, do what makes you happy, and post a picture for us. Just understand the value will have taken a huge hit.

Sorry to hear you did not like your AV57 neck. I really like mine and use it or a Tele anytime I am playing blues or the old Motown tunes.

Thanks for the responses gents! And especially thanks to brotherdave, your multiple posts on your new P5 have been very informative. There hasn't been a whole lot written about these basses, so any recent reviews are always nice. It sounds like you got a good bass there.

That is a good point about resale value. I never considered taking that into account as I always expect to keep a bass for the rest of my life, but never seem to.

The more I look into it, I don't think the Custom Shop route would be the way to go, especially considering the resale value of the bass. There is no way I would ever make my investment back given the likely cost of involving the CS.

Most likely I'll end up with a used, and somewhat fully depreciated, instrument so having the local guitar repair/re-finisher paint the head stock to match the body wouldn't drop the value too much more. I'd likely never make back the cost of the paint job, but I don't think I'd take as huge of a hit as the CS re-fin.

Thanks again, great forum you have here.

Oh and I posted in the other thread about the AV57 neck, loved it in the winter when I bought it, but the summer was a whole different story. Still wish I had kept that one, a little steel wool or fine grit sandpaper would have done wonders. Live and learn I guess.

+1

Matching headstocks were offered only on certain Jazz Basses from that period.

This feature debuted on the Precision with the introduction of the Special models in 1980.

Unfortunately the matching P-Bass peghead option was shortlived.
