I may be wrong on this but didn't the Japanese Fenders have an all black logo ? I am only stating that all the Japanese versions i have seen so far have had these on the headstock, The logo in the pic looks like the Mexican version and the body looks to have been re-finshed as well, If it was my choice i would pass on this one and get an American bass with known provenance, Brother Dave is the best judge on this subject, Its a pity you cannot get pics from the seller with the pickguard upturned and the neck pocket exposed to see whats lies underneath, It just doesn´t look like a 27 year old bass as far as i can see from the pics.....IMO

I'm no real Fender Japan expert, but it looks legit but modified to me. The headstock logo looks ok. Fender Japan used several different logos depending on the quality level and year. This would be like their Standard or mid range one. I don't think all 4 bridge saddles are original. Three look too new. The pickup is not original. Non-original pickups are often seen on Japanese Fenders because the Japanese electronics are almost always the weak link when compared to a USA one. So it will sound better but be worth less than an all original one.

The price of 605 Euros = 805 USD.

In the southeastern USA where I live this instrument would be worth more like 650 to 700 USD. HOWEVER all Fender instruments are worth more in Europe whether new or used, and I have no idea what they are worth there. I just know it is more than here. But since it has been modified it is not "collectible" and even there it would be worth less than one that was all original. They are also worth more in big music center cities like LA, NYC, Nashville, ETC than around where I live.

The wood, fit and finish on every Fender Japan bass I've ever seen was great except I'd personally avoid the "photoflame" ones. But even those are pretty. This one isn't one of those. The Fender Japan bass weak links are historically electronics along with hardware that is somewhat different even if not substandard to the USA hardware. Also USA/MIM parts are often not interchangeable with Fender Japan so far as things like tuners, pickguards and bridges go. Oddly enough necks and bodies often but always are interchangeable though.

Agree that is a nice finish and it appears in great shape to be 27 years old. There are some nicks around the headstock. Can't really tell much about fretwear. If it plays ok it might be worth getting it if you like it. BUT, as many have said you might just save up more for a USA one. Used USA ones are going for about the same thing here as the asking price for this one there.

Hi guys!

What are your thoughts on this p bass on sale here in the UK?

Please click on the link and you will see the seller's description and images

http://basschat.co.uk/topic/248863-fend ... msearch__1

I currently have a jazz bass MIA, but I'm curious about the sound and feel of playing a P bass. Unfortunately my limited budget wouldn't let me buy a MIA P Bass, so wondering whether this Japan made P bass would do the trick.

I play in three bands, two of them are original rock songs, and I'm thinking of using a P bass for these projects and leave the jazz for the third one, which is funk.

Thanks for reading and the feedback
M.

Those would be the right assignments for a Jazz and a P. The one in the link you posted appears genuine as far as I can tell. With upgraded electronics the Japanese ones make good players and they do seem more plentiful and affordable in Europe than USA ones. The Fender Japan necks in general rival USA vintage ones. The stampings are correct on the neck paddle. The Fender Japan basses I like best are ones with V serials. I have owned several Fender Japan instruments and after redoing the electronics they make really good players.

I'd say if you throw another $100 (USD) at it that it will make a good gigging bass. Add a new mass produced pickup like a Seymour Duncan or Fender and a better tone cap because Fender Japan uses poly chicklets. Leave the existing pots since they don't matter to tone at all. The bridges are lightweight on them, but are comparable to USA vintage ones except they are made by Gotoh. Gotoh makes decent hardware, just not quite as good as USA or Schaller Germany stuff used by Fender USA.

Thanks, I was sure you would provide some good information. Cheers!
