Hey guys, I am new here!

I would love to buy me my first Fender bass and I have stumbled upon this little Japanese beauty. Is it worth buying / any experiences with this guitar or should I wait and buy an American Standard ? Apart from a few scratches it is in mint condition and it has got a new pickup (Seymour Duncan SPB3).

Thanks.

EDIT : the price is 630 € second hand. At my country the basses retail like this : Standard MIM : 539 €, American Standard : 1279 €

Wow! What a beautiful bass!
I've heard the 80's Japanese Fenders are great basses and the SPB3 is a good sounding pickup.
Do you live in Europe? And are you buying it locally?\

Welcome to forum!
That's a nice looking bass!
I don't have any first hand knowledge on the MIJ basses, but from what I have read they are pretty good.
I have an active FCS Jazz that came with SD pups and I also put some SJ5-3's in a passive Squier Jazz I own. I'm very satisfied with them.
Keep us posted on what you decide.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Yeah, I live in Europe, I live in the same country as the seller, but way too far, so we would have to agree on sending it through the post office. Money’s a bit tight at the moment, so even If I decided to buy it, I would have to wait....my B-day is coming though, so I may leave some hints to my family members, that I could use some spare money :)

Since that serial format was used from 1984 until 1987 how do you know it is a 1986?

Fender Japan instruments have a lot going for them, however the electronics are usually the weak link in them. That isn't as much of a problem here as the original pickup is already gone.

It is hard to advise on buying any instrument I've not actually played. Lots of people actually prefer Fender Japan models. Definitely at this time they were very, very good quality.

I don’t know, that’s just what the seller says (that 1986 thing). Well, If it will be still available late-March, I will probably grab it. Thank you guys for your opinions.

If I could add something - I am a big fan of Fender Japan basses, but you should be aware that they have always produced various levels of quality. Entry level, medium, high level with American pickups - they run the whole gamut. I think I can safely say though that the medium level stuff in my experience was always pretty good. Try before you buy if possible!

The first digit number after the "E" prefix shows the year of manufacture. For example
E 678901 means it was made in 1986. However, this is not always true. There were instances that the next number after E is 8 or even 9. Does it mean it was made in 1988 or 1989? No one knows, only the guys at Fender Japan know. But Fender Japan officially recognizes that the E serial was made from 1984-1987.

Your serial decoding solution would be accurate for USA made instruments. However Fender Japan serials do not decode as reliably as the USA and Mexican serials. An alpha numeric code on a Fender Japan instrument usually spans 2 or more years. Not just the Fender Japan E6 format but also the E3 and other formats will span multiple years.

Fender Japan is not really part of FMIC but a licensee consortium of two Japanese companies who jointly run Fender Japan as an independent entity. They have rights to use the Fender designs and logos and sell all the Fender Japan stuff they can in Japan. Fender Japan serializes their instruments independent of FMIC convention.

Fender Japan is a joint licensed venture of Yamano Gakki and Kanda Shokai. Yamano's a musical instrument retailer with their own retail outlets and Kanda Shokai is strictly a wholesaler/distributor that doesn't sell direct to the public.

FMIC chooses which of the Fender Japan's offerings to import and distribute in FMIC's territory. During the transition from CBS made Fenders at Fullerton to FMIC made Fenders at Corona it was Fender Japan that provided the Fender instruments and amps for FMIC distribution which kept the brand alive and in the western world.

Fender Japan doesn't have any "Fender" plants. Fender Japan orders instruments via contracts from Japanese guitar mega-factories such as FujiGen, Dyna and Tokai. These plants are totally independent of Fender Japan and FMIC plus these plants make many other brands of instruments, not just Fender. Once shipped from the factories Yamao Gakki distributes them via their own chain of retail stores while Kanda Shokai distributes them to other Fender Japan authorized dealers including the large Ishibashi chain plus handles export shipments to FMIC.

So I am about to grab it after Easter Holidays. Guys, how to spot a fake Fender? I am pretty confident with the seller, but you can’t be 100% confident right? He has provided me quite a lot of pictures of this bass (20+). Or, if I would post some more pictures here (of for example : headstock etc.) do you think you would be able to tell whether it is fake or not.

Cheers.

We've spotted quite a few bad ones. Usually these will have an alpha numeric stamp on the neck butt or paddle and in the body's neck pocket saying P-57. That is commonly seen. People are so good at making fakes I'm sure we miss a few but post all the photos you want and we'll look. What I see so far looks authentic.

If it's possible to wait and get the American Standard..I think you should do so. You'll want a U.S. Fender later on.

I agree that MIJ quality was high in the mid 80s, but I would wait and purchase a MIA bass.

Here are the pictures : https://picasaweb.google.com/Biomasa.TO ... pSsu-qu1wE. And, at the point where I will be able to afford a decent MIA Fender I think I would like to buy me a MM better. MM Stingray 5 is one of my lifelong dreams along with Rick.

Thanks guys.

PS : My mind was playing tricks on me, what was 20+ is only like 10....still a lot of pics for me.
