Hi guys. I have an old American Fender P-bass built in 1972, and I don’t know whether or not I should clean it or just let it keep its natural vintage look. What do you think?

I’ve been cleaning and polishing some of my guitars/basses over the past few days. It started out with just one guitar, but I was so impressed with the results that I decided to go ahead and do some others. For the most part, I’ve just been conditioning the fretboards, polishing the frets, polishing the hardware, and cleaning up the bodies. Seriously, these guitars are coming out dazzling. They look brand new!

I am reluctant to clean the P-bass , however, because I don’t want to depreciate its vintage value (assuming it has some.) Over the years, it has become naturally warn from play and it looks like the true vintage instrument that it is. It lacks any luster and looks really dull. The bass plays beautifully though and I really don’t have any problems with it. I know cleaning the bass would probably increase its life in the long-run. But I'm also aware that there is a market for vintage-looking instruments (e.g., relic guitars, reissues, etc.)

The original case for the P-bass is also very dirty. I just got done cleaning a Gibson jumbo acoustic guitar case from the 70s, and it looks beautiful. I polished the brass locks and hardware, and used vinyl cleaner to restore the outside. The Gibson was in pretty shape beforehand, and cleaning it seems to have really given it a new life.

So what do you think? Should I clean my P-bass and its case, or should I keep it the way it is? Do you think cleaning it would affect its value (i.e., would it decrease?)

Thanks for your help! I truly appreciate it!

Do you play the bass or just look at it in its case? Do you like your bass looking new or the warn out look? Value? It's up to you and the buyer if you sold it. I like my bass in between, keep it clean, but due to gigs and practice it looks like an older bass but it has been kept up as far as cleaning and polishing goes. It all falls back to you, what do you like, it's your bass.
