We had our first rehearsl with me using the P5 this evening. Of course I got compliments on it's looks from everyone, but after hitting about 4 or 5 notes their eyes really opened wide! Our sound man echoed what I have said about the B string. It's the best we've heard.
I used my SansAmp and a Peavey Max 115 at rehearsal and I dialed it in before hitting a note based on what I did with my Hartke amp at the house. I was lucky and guessed right 'cause I never touched the knobs after that. :o
I was told of all the basses I've played, this one sounds the best.....including my FCS Jazz.
They continued complimenting the bass on it's looks and sound all night. I loved having that p-bass thump & big bottom sound with each note coming through clear. I had even turned the volume down a little.
I guess this one is a keeper.

Nice- I'd love to score a killer 5 P bass! Sounds like you got the 1 in a hundred bass. Some Fenders just kick and some don't so much. Some just have that little bit more "oomF" - if you know what I mean!

I'm not sure I got the "1 in a hundred". I think most of these P5's are pretty good. The one I sent back had a great sound. This one seems about the same. Anyone in the market for a new 5 string would be doing theirselves an injustice if they don't at least check out one of these before they buy.
One of the reasons me and the guys love the sound of this bass is, well it's what we grew up listening to. The passive p-bass has been, and still is, used on so many recordings.
Our drummer laughed at me when I said, "Just a split single coil pup, 1 volume knob, 1 tone knob and an input jack". He said you just need/like the bare basics and I told him, yep that's all I need.

brotherdave you might as well go to Vegas with me. If I'm unlucky doesn't that better the odds that you will be?

I played one at chistmas time at a local guitar center. Still had plastic on the pickguard, but it had a really bad setup on it.
Wish Fender would make a american deluxe 5 string with a precision & a jazz bass pickup?????
Maybe 60's colors?
Don't like the offset style of a jazz bass

I rarely find any bass at any shop set up the way I like it. I think Fender does a decent set up, but then shipping, warehouse storrage, hanging on the wall in a shop for who knows how long handle by who knows what  ....has to have some effect on the set up.
I met a young bass player at GC a few months back. He was thumpin', poppin' and slappin on a used Ibanez through a small Fender kickback amp. I mean this kid was good and sounded good. When he was through he put the bass back up and left. I checked the bass out and the strings had to be a half inch off the the neck at the 12th fret. I couldn't believe he played and sounded that good with action so high.
I didn't just eat a slice of humble pie.......I ate the whole pie!
