Hi All

First time post so hopefully this works, I have been offered this "original" Precision Bass which is supposed to be 1980's, serial no 9+5digits. The only thing I'm not up on the history of these and it has two pickups. What is it?

Precision

From the link to the photo you provided it looks like you have a Fender Precision Plus,
They were in production from 1989 -92 .... this model had a revised shape contoured double - cutaway body with elongated left horn (top side) with a 22 fret neck, the pickups consist of a P bass split coil pickup near the neck & a straight jazz pickup near the bridge (I'm not sure what model P & J pickups are in this bass ......does your bass have stock P Bass & J Bass pickups or have they been swapped out for after market pickups), there's a four saddle bridge on this model & it has individual fine tuners & aside from the volume & tone knobs there's a pickup selector switch & there should be a white push button between the volume & Tone knobs.

There should be a letter in front of the 9 ...... if there's an E before the 9 + 5 digits then it was made in 1989 & 1990 if there's a letter "N" before the 9+ 5 digits then it was made in 1991 ....... Nice Bass..... :)

It's starts with a N2 so looks like he may have got his decades mixed up.

Makes it an early 90's plus.

How would people rate these over standard precision, Jazz or Thunderbird if I could get them all for the same price.

a serial number starting with N2 would mean it was made in 1992-93 the Precision Plus is a very nice bass ,....do you like it?? the Jazz bass is also good (I have 6 of them) I also have one precision bass ........I like the Thunderbird bass but it's not the best balanced bass out there, ....that being said it's been around since 1963 & John Entwhistle played one so I can't knock it ( Right Oxfan.. :) ).......it's a good Rock bass....... as are the Jazz & P Bass ( The Precision Plus is very versatile with the P/J set up & pickup switch selector plus this model is harder to come by).......I'd say go for the one that feels & plays good

The Precision Plus is a GREAT bass. The only other bass that trumps one of those would have to be something high end.

The Thunderbird(if it's a Gibson) would probably be worth more in dollars..but the Longhorn is the better bass imo.

Seriously...those thing's are awesome.

George Blanda designed both the passive Plus and active Plus Deluxe. They came online about 1989 and only lasted till 1993. The Blandaesque high end Fender logoed precision hardware (made by Schaller in Germany) makes them solid stable instruments. I love the bridges on these and consider them the best Fender logoed bridges. These two models were in the price tier of today's American Deluxe series and they had Lace pickups. Blanda's 22 Fret neck required deeper cutaways which meant the body had to be a tad longer to balance and the horns are more dramatic on them also.

The Plus Deluxe was active while the Plus used a passive TBX tone circuit, toggle and push-button phase switch for the neck pickup. There is no comparable control set today. Both were very, very nice instruments. If I had my choice between the Plus and the Plus Deluxe I'd probably choose the Plus, but the Lace pickups sounded good active as well. The active Plus Deluxe had no pickguard.

Sorry Stratele52, the serial number is N2 9+5digits.

Hope that clears it up.

Another question (now I'm on a role)

Got my hands on this bass, now my next problem.

This is primarily for my son who is in his teens, jamming with friends at homes and maybe school.

The only AMP I have is a Cube 80X, so do I get a new/secondhand bass AMP or do I get myself a new tube amp and let him have the cube for bassing?

What do people think, given there's no gigging in the near furture,

You could give your kid the Cube 80 & get yourself a Fender Bronco40 for practicing & Jamming .....they're tons of fun,...I have one for practicing & I have an 800w SWR rig for gigs.
Also take a look at the Fender's Rumble Combo line of Amps , decide who gets one (you or your son) & pick a Rumble that would suit your (or your Sons) needs.... the Rumble 75 Combo or Rumble 150 will more than suit your need,...... I'm a fan of the Rumble combo 350
but it's probably more amp than you need, but that being said it's a great Value. :)

Son, from my vast knowledge and experience I would guess that what you have there is a genuine BASS guitar, electric to be exact. Glad to help
