The midrange boost pot for my '00 P5 Deluxe makes louder pops and cracks than my knees. I've cleaned it, to no avail. Where can I purchase a new pot? Online? In a store? Any where in the NYC area? I do my own repair work, so just the part will suffice.
Thanks!

I don't address this specific issue on my website which has more general type info than specific info on this sort of thing. You may have to copy and paste the links below as listing them as clickable URL's to open in a new window prevents me from posting them for some reason, probably anti-spamming post blocking steps the admin recently took.

Before replacing the pot, I'd try another shot or two or three or four of DEOXIT D5 spray again and rotate the pot full travel about 100 to 200 times each time and let it dry completely between each and every application. 5 to 10 minutes between applications is enough time. DEOXIT D5 is a safe product to use on guitar pots.

While you are probably using the correct technique it is a good idea to review the process for using spray contact cleaner on pots since there are many ways to do it wrong. One online tutorial is located here: http://www.ehow.com/how_4809739_clean-g ... meter.html

Before we get into changing out the pot it is always important to remember that pots on a vintage/collectible instrument should never be replaced outright even if multiple spray cleanings do not cure the noise as it is usually possible for an experienced and skilled vintage instrument tech to repair a pot by disassembling it and cleaning the internal parts individually by hand or even by replacing the internal parts with new internal parts from a new pot without changing the pot casing. By repairing the pot instead of replacing it all the pot codes match or remain original to the instrument. Just because a Fender USA instrument isn't vintage or collectible now doesn't mean in 25 years it won't be, so for me outright pot replacement is sort of the last resort on any USA Fender. Having a pot repaired is very expensive compared to just replacing it, but on a vintage/collectible instrument it more than pays for itself in retained value.

If cleaning several more times with DEOXIT D5 spray doesn't restore silent operation, then I believe this is the diagram for your instrument.
http://support.fender.com/service_diagr ... A_SISD.pdf

Compare that diagram to your 2000 American Deluxe Precision Bass V. If a match then the mid control pot is the one most inferior to (or farther from) the neck and that is part #16 on the control diagram with Fender Part Number 0049443000 described as Control, 100KB, CTS.

While any CTS 100KB pot might work, often Fender pots will have features such as center detents, click stops, etc that are not present in a generic CTS pot so if these features are present then you probably should order the actual Fender part through a Fender dealer. Online dealers include Darren Riley and a direct link to order the part online from his shop is: http://www.darrenriley.com/shop/cart.ph ... ail&p=1105 It is currently listed as costing $7.95 however there will a shipping fee added to that at checkout which is $7 for USA. Orders over 99 dollars from his shop have no shipping fee. Being in NYC it is possible you can find the pot locally and avoid shipping fees or shipping delays.

Also if that is the correct service diagram, it is a good idea to PRINT IT OUT and save it to your computer for future reference. It will not be available online forever.
