Are there many differences between the American Series Precision Bass and an American Standard? Or is it same bass, different name? I'm looking to pickup a 2000 American Series P bass and I only knew American Standard and American Special.
Any ideas would be helpful!
Thanks!

For the little bit of price difference, go for the Am. Std. The two series are not the same basses. I'm amazed they did away with the Highway One series for the Am. Spl. series. There are enough differences. About $150. in the up grade is about the cost of the hardshell case that comes with the Am. Std., over the gig bag that comes with the Am. Spl.

Thanks... But I know about the American "Special" bass... I am referring to what Fender called "American Series" They ran this instead of American Standard from 2000-2008. I am confused....

Wait for more responses before buying, please. I am pretty sure the American Series is made offshore, I think Mexico, where the American Standard is made in CA. My knowledge pretty much dies at 2001, so please just hold off until someone more knowledgeable responds.

I just found more.... This is from Blue Book site:

Summer 2000 NAMM show, Fender introduced the new "American Series" that was announced as an evolution of the American Series. Changes included a non-veneered body, rolled neck edges, a rounded body radius, a graphite reinfoced maple neck, cast/open-back tuners, and a three layer parchment/black/parchment pickguard. At the Winter 2008 NAMM show, Fender introduced the third round of the American Precision Bass, and the name reverted back to the old one as the "American Standard Precision Bass." Changes include a new High Mass Vintage bridge, new tuners, a new tinted neck treatment, thinner finish undercoat, and all basses come with an SKB molded case.

I would love to hear more on whether it's completely made in US or not... This one does NOT have an S-1 switch.

The "American Series" P Bass was kind of like the "American Standard" from 2000 to 2007.
It was made in USA. They wouldn't call it the "American Series" if it were made in Mexico or any other country.

The most notable differences were that the American Series had the series/parallel switch on top of the volume control (no big deal) from 2003 to 2007. The other notable difference is that the American Standard also went to lightweight tuners when it came out in 2008.

The American Series is/was a great bass. My "go to" bass is an American Series bass. Some people claim that the 2008 and newer American Standard is much better. Personally, I think it is pretty much the same thing. Few changes were necessary. They are both great basses.

These were the same class of instrument as today's American Standard.

The S-1 Switch on the American Series Precisions was a great idea, but it should have been a toggle instead of the push on/push off switch. The S-1 switches can be a trouble spot.

Prior to the S1 switch Fender introduced a push-push button which allowed the series/parallel wiring from the split-coil humbucker.

This feature was present on the Boner Precisions produced between 1989 and 1991. Boners made after 1992 do not have that button.
