I've recently acquired a gently used 1997 Fender Precision bass. Flame maple top. Had it put in order -- new strings, action tweaked. Looking to sell it. No idea what it's worth... Anybody care to weigh in? I may sell privately... or be lazy and head to Guitar Center.

The Forum Member Code of Conduct states as the very first rule, "For sale and wanted ads are not allowed." There is nothing in the code to prohibit inquiring about the current market value of a particular instrument, which is what the original poster was doing. I didn't see this as an advertisement to sell or buy anything. Just a question about market value. That is allowable as I interpret the Code and there has never been any problems associated with value questions like this here.

Welcome to the Fender Forum Peachymama! I will be happy to give you my opinion. First I am in North Carolina near Charlotte. Any values I quote are what I'm estimating for here where I live and they can vary substantially depending on where you are. Fender basses typically bring more in a music center city like Nashville, Los Angeles, Seattle, Austin, New York City, Chicago, etc. They bring less in economically depressed markets such as Detroit. They bring the very most in foreign markets such as Europe, the UK or Asia because they are less numerous and therefore scarcer.

Before making a guess I need more information. 1. Is this a made in the USA instrument? 2. Can you post photos of the instrument? That is crucial to any value estimate as then I'll know what condition it is in at this time. Need full length photos front and back, need closeup of headstock front and back, need closeup of body including bridge, pickup and controls and need photo of any included case. 3. What is the serial number? Often someone will think they have a certain year but have another year altogether. 4. Is it all original, other than strings? This is crucial also. 5. If a USA instrument does it come with the original factory case, and is any of the original accessories included still in the case? (Strap, adjustment tools, manual, cord, etc.) 6. Is there any documentation showing a chain of ownership including the original receipt from when it was sold as new? 7. What is the general condition and is it fully functional?

I know that seems like a lot of questions, but I can't really answer your question without knowing these things and seeing some photos.

Taking it to a dealer like Guitar Center is a fast and easy way to "get rid of it" but you will get substantially more for it by selling it yourself in a private party sale. Dealers typically will offer you half of what they plan to sell it for. For example if they give you $400 they will mark it at $800. While you can't expect to realize the same sale price in a private party sale that a dealer will, you can get far more than a dealer will offer you to buy it outright. I always discourage selling to any dealer unless you are in a tremendous hurry and are willing to take far less than you could realize in a private party sale. A private party sale takes longer, requires a little work too, but is usually worth it.

Thank you. Yes, I'm just looking for information. I'm new to this. :D I'm near Boston. I believe it's American made. Will post pics... Don't know about the previous ownership. May have been one owner (but I just don't know for sure). I don't have a pic of the case...

Is there a way to attach pics here? I have a bunch. Or I can send via email...

In answer:

1. Is this a made in the USA instrument? Yes

2. Can you post photos of the instrument? I have pics of all except the case (can get that). Need to figure out how to post the pics here!

3. What is the serial number? I don't know... The instrument is at a friend's house (he put on the strings, etc.)

4. Is it all original, other than strings? I believe so. I certainly didn't do anything to it. Don't know what the previous owner did to it, but not likely anything.

5. If a USA instrument does it come with the original factory case, and is any of the original accessories included still in the case? Yes, it's in original case... but the accessories aren't there.

6. Is there any documentation showing a chain of ownership including the original receipt from when it was sold as new? No.

7. What is the general condition and is it fully functional? My friend says it's in great shape and fully functional.

First, upload all the photos you want to post to a free online photo host, such as photobucket dot com.

Second. leaving your photo hosting page open, open a new window and start a post here. In the tool bar above the text block there is a button labeled "Img" and wherever you want your photo to appear in the post, click that "Img" button then copy and paste the DIRECT LINK to the specific photo you wish to post in the forum in the location where the cursor lands in between the IMG tags. You can post as many links to photos as you wish but you have to click the "Img" button for each photo and paste the direct link for that photo in the tag. It is best if they are not too wide, say 700 pixels wide so they don't expand the margins.

Another way to do it is to create an album for those photos you wish to share and make them public. Then just paste a link to the album using the "URL" button instead of the "IMG" button.

Either way we can see them.

Just phone your friend and get the first few characters of the serial. If a USA 97 it probably should start "N7." Need all the letters at the beginning of the serial and the first number in the serial to date it.

If USA made then a 97 model will say "Made in USA" on the headstock.

Without photos and knowing what how the serial begins making a value guess is a slippery $@!&#. Values vary based on condition and originality.

Ok, based on these photos it is at least a 9 out of 10. A dealer would ask about $850 to $900 for that around here making $875 sort of the dealer average if the original case is in good shape also. If I had it myself I'd want to get $800 for it in a private sale but might have to negotiate down a little but I surely wouldn't go lover than $750. In Boston it might be worth a little more or a little less. I really don't know Boston's music economy at all.

Whatever you do - DON'T GO TO GUITAR CENTER! As mentioned, for the bass they are selling you, they will not give you a good deal - they will probably give you half of what they plan on selling it for. Sometimes this isn't a bad thing, but in the case of a relatively recent instrument, it is not worth it.

The other thing about being in the Boston area - you are in an area saturated with musicians, between Berklee College of Music and the various bands. I think you would do well to shoot a bit high via craigslist - you can always come down to meet the buyer's price and still make a bit. Just look into the suggestions for selling locally - don't go alone, go in a public place, etc.

Best of luck! (As a fellow near-Bostonite to another!)

I agree with Dave, from looking at the picture & with out playing it I'd say it's worth between $800. - $900. ........ if I were selling it I'd be happy to get &775.- 800.
if you sell privately go a little high on the selling price.....ask maybe $925.- $950. & see where it goes..... good Luck.. :D
