I got what it seems to be a very good offer. Somebody is offering me his 79 P bass for my bass in a trade value of $900...This seems to be very good deal to me, unfortunally i dont know anything about vintage Fenders. Can you tell me if this bass is original

well just from seeing it from so far away it's hard to get a good look at it. It could very well be a 79-- take a close up pic of the front of the headstock so we can see the serial # or if it's not there see if it's on the back of the heastock or on the neckplate- then closeup picks are a must.

I think in 1979 the P-Bass pickguards were either black or white depending on body finish. If this is the original finish it probably would have come with a black pickguard.

I agree with Brother Dave, pick guard is not original, everything else looks ok. Serial # should start with S9

I would make the trade, as long as you are not undervaluating what you have. Not a lot to lose at $900 for an excellent condition P regardless of the year. You are gambling maybe $250 tops, but if the serial number and ashtray holes are confirmed by the components when you take it apart, you could have a $1500-$2000 bass. Buy a period correct pickguard for around $180...nice piece.

Would be nice to see inside first...just sayin....
