Back in the day when I played at bass, I added a thumb rest to my '78 Precision.

Jerry I have 4 thoughts on that photo.

1. So YOU'RE THE ONE drilling the extra holes!

2. Why not just use the top of the pickup?

3. Why not just use the "E" string?

4. Why not just one real long one such as on the discontinued Line 6 Variax Bass?

LOL

I'm an "E" string thumbrester. Picked that habit up in 1968 with my Telecaster Bass and it is still my preferred thumbrest. I also sometimes use the pickup casing on a second generation split coil P-Bass if there is no vintage chrome cover. I've seen players who claim to use the pickup casing are often seen actually using the "E" string instead. (e.g. Donald "Duck" Dunn.)

The only thing I can say is, at the time, I figured why not ?

Whether or not it improved my ability is definitely up for grabs. I was never a bass (or guitar) player anyone would want to write home about :D

I'm not familiar with the Line "6 Variax Bass", I'll have to look that up.

I also use the pick up covers where available, I do not like the idea of resting mu thumb on the pick up itself.

Although I am against resting the thumb on the E - String (IN THEORY!) I do it a lot in practice.
