I have too many basses also. And no I don't want to give any away! :) I would like to try cello maybe.

I was good this year, so Santa brought me TWO special presents. First, he brought me a TC Electronic BG250 combo, and then he brought me a Fender Blacktop P! So you can tell, I was VERY good this year! :D
(The bear is leaning against the BG250.)

I need to know all about that bass!!! Very interesting set up. Nice- fill me in on it okay? I haven't been looking at the catalog. I have had to put myself in an "ignore everything" mode in order not to gas out and buy more basses. I have too many and I need to stop. That's just me though. More power to everyone buying a new bass but I cut myself off because I needed to.

What a great Christmas! That bass looks like it could have a lot of possibilities.

I'm interested in the amp. TC's new models look interesting and affordable. I have looked and looked for Blacktop basses and nobody ever has any in North Carolina.

Blacktop basses are really well made, and they have a loud growl, not a Jazz Bass growl, a sound all their own. Definitely a consideration. Got to play one like Sharon's and the Jazz model. IMO the Precision sounded better.

Come on Sharon, tell us more!

I understand completely! I, too, stopped looking at gear because I just wanted more ... and nobody seems willing to adopt me and support me in the style to which I'd like to be accustomed. :(

Then a certain fellow whose name starts with "R" threw temptation in my face with a Black Friday coupon (source of the BG250). The gates of acquisition had been opened ...

Good thing I was good this year, and Santa felt generous! :D

(SV, if you ever need someone to foster any of your gear, just let me know. :D  )

CAVEAT: when I played a Blacktop P at a store a couple of months ago through my digital recorder (to eliminate the effect of an amp I couldn’t afford :D ), I was not impressed, and left it at the store instead of taking it home as I had expected.

DISCLAIMER: The following is an OPINION of a relative bass newb. Your experience might very well differ. I don’t have experience gigging, or even sharing live with other bass players, so I don’t necessarily have accurate vocabulary to describe the tones of this bass. So …

I think that between the pickups & tone knob, and your right hand technique (including where you play), you can probably get whatever tone you want out of the Blacktop P. :D What I can say is that I like it. There are some tones that seem easier to find on the Blacktop compared to on my P or my Deluxe P Special (mim).

What I’m not so keen on is separate volume controls for each pickup. I think it would be much easier to have the same set up as my Special: one volume control and one pan control to select the “ratio” of the pickups. I don’t know enough of the technicalities to know whether one approach offers benefits that the other does not, besides easier control over each aspect (one turn to adjust volume at the bass, vs. two – one for each pickup, etc.)

I bought this bass from Sweetwater, and chose the specific one (of two black ones that they had) because I liked the variation in the rosewood fingerboard color. I did look at the White Chrome Pearl (which they said looks more like a champagne color), but decided to stick with the black one, ‘cuz it looks more wicked. Besides, black is a classic color and goes with everything. :D

It has its own pickups (“Blacktop Bass humbucking pickups”), and its own bridge (“Blacktop 4-saddle adjustable HiMass bridge”). One reviewer had written that he planned to replace the bridge but changed his mind after getting the bass and playing it for a bit. Overall the reviews were very positive, and people who had expected to modify their bass changed their minds to leave it as-is.

I was pleasantly surprised to find today while playing it that the gloss finish on the back of the neck wasn’t “sticky” as I have experienced when I’ve played other basses at a store. I generally prefer a satin finish, so we’ll see how it goes.

It came with round wounds, and as long as I kept the tone knob lower, I didn’t get too much finger noise. When I replace the strings, I will probably go with the D’Addario nylon tape wounds. A number of reviewers posted that they thought it should come with flat wounds.

http://www.fender.com/products/blacktop/blacktop-precision-bass

I played a variety of songs today using all of the strings and at various frets, as well as just noodling about, and was able to get a variety tones that I was satisfied with. I played with the settings on the amp set at “neutral”, as well as changing the amp settings around. I played:
Black Magic Woman (Santana),
Neon Moon (Brooks & Dunn),
I’ll Take You There (Staple Singers),
Desperation Samba (Jimmy Buffett),
Gimme, Gimme Good Lovin’ (Crazy Elephant),
Hang On Sloopy (The McCoys),
Honky Tonk (a version by The Ventures, not Bill Doggett),
Little Bit O’ Soul (The Music Explosion),
Living’ On The Edge (Aerosmith; I should try drop tuning this bass for this song & Nothing Else Matters by Metallica),
Sunshine Of Your Love (Cream),
Under The Boardwalk (The Drifters),
We Gotta Get Out of This Place (Animals)
some riffs I like (including reggae, 12-bar blues)

I’m planning to check out a local open blues jam in the near future, so we’ll see which bass I take.

Now that I’m home from family Christmas travels, I’m looking forward to some quality time with my new gear. :D It will be interesting to see if I gravitate back to my Deluxe P Special, or stick more with the Blacktop. On the Special, I RARELY use the bridge pickup. I can see where the bridge pickup on the Blacktop will probably see more action.

--------------------
I’m VERY happy with the TCE BG250 combo. (http://www.tcelectronic.com/bg250/; scroll down – there are sound samples). I have an Acoustic B100 combo (last year’s model) that I haven’t been overly satisfied with, as well as a half stack with a Hartke LH500 head that I haven’t dialed in the sound yet. The BG250 seems to make it easy to find a tone I like (which varies from day to day), and to hear each note more clearly or articulated than the B100. PaducahLuke has given me some suggestions about how to position the B100 that might give me better sound, but I haven’t tried them out yet. I’ve been looking at the BG250 since it was announced last spring. What attracted my attention is the power to weight ratio (it’s only 35 pounds! And 250w! :D ), the “TonePrint” feature (which I haven’t played around with yet), and that it has a headphone jack and aux input. I pretty much require those, especially since I frequently play late at night.

:D

Wow, your playlist would fit right in with us. Let me know if you want to move to Florida. The bear looks like he/she has longer fingers than I do. Probably faster too.

I have sold 8 basses and only bought two, but I have been working on a very special Fender I was hoping to have for Christmas. I think January is now more realistic. Fingers are crossed.

Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays Fender Folks!
