I'd like know more about pickups used in US Vintage series (pre 2000).

I have American Vintage / US Vintage / Vintage Reissue US Made '62 P-bass made in 1997, and the pickup pole pieces are flat.

I also have 60th anniversary P-bass and I saw few newer '62s than mine and they all have pole pieces coned and slightly raised above the plastic cover.

Also could anybody tell me what is the corrent name for the series before Fender introduced American Vintage series in 2000 or 2002 ?

Any other differencies?

Here is my bass:

I don't have the answer to your questions, but I must say that's a beautiful bass!

You'll definitely get the info you need here on this forum - some of the folks here are extremely knowledgable when it comes to this stuff :D

Yes that is a gorgeous instrument. To the best of my knowledge the American Vintage Reissue 1962 P-Bass always used the same pickup so your post comes as news to me and I can not explain it either!

Here is what I think you are possibly seeing. These pickup poles are sand cast, meaning "super old-school" bronze-age technology, and there will be minor variations in pole shapes as no two come out exactly alike. This is absolutely to be expected. Sometimes you can have one that looks broken off or uneven and some are a little longer than others. These minor variations in form and appearance of sand cast Alnico poles do not negatively or positively impact function.

This model bass and the accessory pickup are both apparently discontinued having disappeared from Fender's product listings which I consider huge mistakes for Fender. However for you it means the value of your instrument will likely be going up faster than it would if Fender left the instrument in production indefinitely. The pickup is part number # 0992046000 and is the only part number used on that model AVRI that I'm aware of. Even though it was NOT the original pickup used on a Fender Precision Bass (that was a single coil) or even the original split-coil (the '57 was different) the '62 pickup was marketed separately from the 62 AVRI P-Bass instrument as the "Fender Original Precision Bass Pickup." They should look like this photo.

I think that there must be a minor difference between the pickups (the poles), here are detailed photos of my '62 P Reissue and 60th Anniversary P-Bass. Both - according to website - have the "Vintage Precision Bass® Split Single-Coil Pickup". But then again - the page said (when they were still listed), that the series was introduced past 2000 year... Notice how the pole pieces are different:

And here's more recent photos of American Vintage '62 Precision:

(just links, because photos are too big)

Notice the pole pieces are identical to 60th anniversary precision, and different to my - 100% stock and original - US Vintage '62 Precision.

Maybe you are right about the oldschool technology, that would explain a thing :)

EDIT: I've read somewhere over Talkbass, that vefore 2000 the series name was "US Vintage Reissue" and now it's "American Vintage" - maybe more than a name was changed?
