Hello ya'll!!!
I purchased a bass at a pawn shop about 15 years ago, and it's been hard to know the exact origins and to know wether it is a real precision bass. It has the Made in Japan plate on the back, small 5- digit serial number: 40353 on the bottom of the fret board. Dark sunburst with the 80's style metal cap on the bottom bridge... Can anyone help??? I can't put the pics on.. Can email them though...
Thanks

You are going to have to upload the images to a third party image host like PHOTOBUCKET DOT COM or any other free image host. Copy the direct links to the images there on the third party site, start a new forum post here and then click the "IMG" button in the tool bar over the window where you type your forum post. The "IMG" tags will load into the message body with the cursor located where you should paste the link to the photos. Once you have the photo image pasted, you should click the PREVIEW button at the bottom to make sure the photos are displaying correctly. You need to repeat the copying of the image direct link, the clicking of the "IMG" button in the forum post and the pasting of the image link for every photo you want to post. Hope that makes sense.

I think every authentic Fender Japan instrument serial starts with a letter. You can see the guide to them here: http://www.fender.com/support/articles/japanese-instruments-product-dating

Thanks. For the serial number I was told at Fender that they can't seem to go earlier than '93.....

The link I posted goes back to Fender Japan day 1. What Fender told you was that specific info on each serial doesn't go back that far but they have serial format info posted at that link that is general for all models.

You are going to have to post photos. If you can't post them then private message me with the direct links to your photos and I'll post them here for you.

Although this was already an old post, I will give an answer even without the photos. Based on the description, the bass is not Fender Japan for two reasons.
1. Fender Japan never put a MADE IN JAPAN on four bolt neck plate. The MADE IN JAPAN can only be found on 3 bolt neckplate like on the JB75 Jazz bass models.
2. Fender Japan never put the serial number at the bottom of the fretboard. Serial numbers were placed on the:
a) Neckplate (1982-1984 , JV and SQ series)
b) Neckplate (1985 A series)
c) Back of the neck near the pocket or at the headstock.

Hope this helps :D
