Found a new Fender P Bass that is stripped???? USA Bass someone must not have liked the color??? Anway the local certified Fender dealer said if he paints it in original Fender color it can be considered factory???? I have another stripped body a friend of mine is going to paint & he said it would be worth more if he did it. I think this is BS but wanted opinions from the group here.

If it isn't (re)finished at the factory, it cannot be considered "factory", period.

It would be worth more finished than unfinished provided the finish did look like it was done at the factory.

Either way, virtually ANY instrument that has been stripped and refinished is worth less than if it was left alone, regardless of condition.

I agree with Martian. If its refinished - its refinished.
If a Fender warranty repair guy does the finish, its still refinished and non-original IMHO.

Good luck with getting the Fender factory to do a refinish on your bass.

If they do I would like to hear about it and what it cost because I don't think that they are set up to do customer refinish jobs. I could be wrong, but I doubt that they will take on the work.
If you have the bass refinished and it comes out great and you cannot tell that it was ever refinished- Its still a refinished bass.
But you will have to wrestle with your conscience if you sell it as an original finish bass because it is still a refinished instrument.

Good luck

One thing that should be carefully considered is the art value of the new paint job. Is it simply a stock Fender color re-shoot, or are you going to make it/have it done as a work of art? Modify/hotrod your bass all you want, just be sure to do a first rate/top shelf/world class job of it, and you'll have a custom bass worth far more than a simple player class stocker.

That is a VERY good point. I agree with that. This is an opportunity to make it totally fantastic and something no stock bass is instead of trying to make it look stock.

Sounds like the local tech needs some refinish business. He may have meant that it would not void the warranty if there is one. But since it is used there is no warranty in the first place. So I'm not really sure what in the world he meant. People that paint cars can do a reasonably good job with a guitar or bass.

And no, Fender stopped refinishing basses when they were in Fullerton. They will not refinish it. They used to do that and sometimes you'll run across instruments that actually do have a factory refinish which has certain hidden hallmarks to look for under the pickguard where it got stamping impressions to make sure it got back to the right neck and electronics. There are people like Gord Miller that do authentic "type" finishes with nitro. They are worth seeking out if you have deep pockets, otherwise a willing auto shop is good. You can pick any color you like that way.

It's a 2011 bass so why it is stripped of the finish is beyond me! I was going to get it done by my guy in Sonic Blue. It's a 5 string with maple neck USA made I currently have an indo made 5 string. Linnin, what type of mods & Hot Rodding you would do if you had it?

It's a string-through body, right? If so I'd go with the stock Fender bridge that came on the bass.

Five string Precisions bother me a bit because the the split pick-up is asymetrical. Are you happy with the stock pick-up? That's really the big question. If no then what to choose? Route out the body and slap a big delicious G&L humbucker in there? Go with two pick-ups? I did. I went with twin SD 1/4er-pounders in my '76 P.

Nut! Satisfied with a plastic nut? I like the synthetic nut on my 2012 Jazz. Hated the cheap-o plastic nut on my '76 P. Stainless Steel Baby! Straight String Pull & Steel-to-Steel contact. THAT ROCKS! Sustain and TONE like you wouldn't believe. A much recommended mod. 8)

ART not just paint!!! I myself would find an artist that suits your taste and get something wild or mild. Whatever toots your whistle. Art is not usually free and can be quite expensive. But why have a plain-jane ho-hum paint job???

As others have eloquently said, once Fender paints it, they are done with it. Anything else is aftermarket. Have a pro apply something unique on it if it is a MIA, an exceptional sounding instrument, or you might sell it at some point.

I have seen a lot of home finished instruments and virtually all of them are visually wanting. People either don't know how to properly finish an instrument or they short cut the process.

It's your Bass, give it what it deserves.
