Over in Jazzland Bearly_Oakley started a thread on how inexpensive the American Vintages Jazz basses had become at certain e-tailers websites. I just took a peek at Musician's Friend, and man alive they are seriously marked down by 45% or more right now including Fender's $100 'coupon' discount. These are $2K+ basses going for $1200 or less. The American Vintage '57 & '62 Precisions are pretty sweet basses to be going so cheaply. If you've been wanting an affordable American made Fender bass this is the time to pounce! Romp on it NOW :!: Don't wait. This has been a public service announcement. 8)

Both the '57 & '62 American Vintage Precisions are no longer on Fender's product listings. They're $1,160 at Musician's Friend.

That's almost half price!

The '62 and '75 Jazzes will also disappear from the products page soon.

We'd expect the new AVRI basses coming out in January!

The 62 AVRI Jazz and P-Bass are still there. The links are incomplete, possibly truncated by the "forum software upgrade." In general the "upgrade" isn't really working out for me here.

All you have to do is go to the online dealer's site and search "FENDER VINTAGE BASS" and they pop right up. I just tried it.

New Fenders are traditionally unveiled at NAMM which starts January 24th in Anaheim. I'm not expecting anything till then at the earliest. I don't see how they could "improve" or "upgrade" either of the 62's they've been making for a long time now. Change for the sake of change is not always a good thing.

Hi everybody. New here, so, grab the wheel if you see me driving off the road. I won't take offence..

I'd been wanting a 62 AVRI pbass for years and since it looked like Fender was about to phase them out I finally pulled the trigger on one (Oly White). Got a good price and so far so good. Great bass. This is my question:

What strings came stock on this bass and what size strings could I switch to without filing the nut? I haven't been able to find (here or elsewhere) a concrete answer about exactly which strings Fender puts on the 62 AVRI Pbass. The best guess so far is Fender 7250ML Nickel wrapped Steel (.045, .065, .080, .100). Like I said, I'm new here and new to forums in general. If this has been asked/answered 1000 times already, sorry.. I did several searches and eventually joined just so that I could ask this. I played American Standard Fenders years ago but lost them all in hurricane Katrina. Ended up with a Ric 4003 and played that exclusively for the past 7 years. Now I'm coming back home to Fender with this 62 Pbass but as usual, I'm already looking to ditch the stock strings. I usually prefer all nickel rounds. I like a warmer fatter growl instead of the brighter steel zingy sound. I play with finger as well as a pick sometimes. I'm not totally ruling out flats but on a brand new bass I'd really rather not modify the nut to fit larger strings and I'd also rather not stress the neck with high tension flats. Without knowing exactly what size the stock strings are it's hard to even make any change at all. For example, if I go with Fender 7150 "original bass" (pure nickel .045, .060, .085, .105) strings, the E and A strings might be heavier than the nut can handle. Any advice is most appreciated! Thanks

I'm sorry, I can't answer your question - though I have no worry that someone here doesn't know the answer, there are some very knowledgeable folks here as I'm sure you know! I just wanted to say welcome back to the Fender P! I recently came back my self the past couple of years, though I still love my Rics too!

I actually picked up a set of digital calipers so that I could measure strings, but that's probably going farther than you want or need. I went with the GHS flatwounds for my Duck Dunn Signature - they aren't too high tension, but they are pretty dark sounding - not sure if you want to go that far.

Thanks for the welcome and the reply. I may have to get the digital calipers if I can't figure it out. Seems like something that would be easy to get from Fender but, not so far. The last new Fender I bought was in the 90's and it came with a card tied to the neck of the guitar that even showed what the pack of strings looked like, in case I wanted to buy more strings like that. Since Fender is phasing out these basses there isn't even a link on the site for me to look at anymore. I think I'm going to send BrotherDave a PM. Now that I've read a bunch of posts here I am 99.9% sure he can tell me the name of the guy at the factory that put the dang strings on my bass before it shipped!! haha

Sooo glad I got my 2012 '62 Olympic White AVRI right before they were phased out. Price was very sweet compared to what these 2013 basses are going for. I prefer the aged (tinted) neck/headstock on mine too... BUT, I do really love that faded blue color with minty white pick guard on the 2013!

What is the difference between the 62 P and the 63 P?

The '63 has a round-laminated rosewood fingerboard with clay dot inlays as opposed to the "slab" types with white dots found on the '62.
