Heads up everyone, the new Fender tweed cases are no longer made in USA by G&G. They are now made in Viet Nam. They also no longer have a single rivet anywhere as far as I can tell. Every single rivet has been replaced by a little screw, that I have to believe will tend to loosen and probably fall out at some point. They also reek inside of chemicals, causing one to wonder what the wood is underneath the foam. I just waited 2.5 months to take delivery on a new guitar and a new bass case from a reputable supplier, and am now disappointed. I would not have bought them if I had seen them first. Alas, another casualty of world economics.

The chemical odor is usually from the adhesives used for holding everything together.

Mr. Nylon is right. Leave the case open in a spare room for a few days. It will help a lot.

This is a pity.

Screws tend to loosen under vibration or repeated stresses. When left to their own devices, it takes a long time to loosen, if installed to correct torque. Unless you intend on storing it on a paint mixer...

I have a really nice, heavy-duty, British-made flight case for my Jazz bass in addition to a SKB. My Bullet is still housed in its original Fender case. I love the look of tweed cases, but I think I'd go with the Canadian-made ones. I can't remember the brand off the top of my head. Anyone?

Take the case to your garage or a room not commonly used and leave it open for about a week. It will allow out-gassing of the unpleasant odors from the adhesives, etc.

There is one type of wood that inherently stinks, but I don't believe it comes from S.E. Asia and I doubt that it would be used in common consumer products like a guitar case.

Tamarkin is the one that comes to mind.

That T reminded me: TKL. I just called them to confirm, and they still make their cases in Canada, as well as Virginia, depending on the case. http://www.tkl.com/

These cases have a much stronger chemical odor than any other new case I have seen. Two cases in a room for one day gave my wife headaches. Of course leaving open in a well ventilated space will mellow them out some, but why should I have to do that? I never had to before with anything new. Plus, there are even screw heads sticking out of the metal feet on the bottom and side, making the screws the point of contact, not the feet. That's just dumb.

It's off gassing. It's the source of the "new car smell." It's normal with anything that has adhesives. If unsatisfied, return them.

This. 'New car smell' can make some people ill as well.

This is very difficult to shrug off. Good cases are hard enough to find as it is and now apparently are much harder to find. The G&G cases as a rule have always been real nice. Fender has switched before. The rectangular plastic embossed ones were just OK. Then they had the cheap guitar shaped ones which really sucked as the chrome bottom footing buttons invariably broke through the weak plastic and they had practically no room for anything in them but the instrument. The SKB TSA latch style case of late is pretty good. But NOTHING beat the G&G for beauty and durability.

(Edited becuz I apparently kan't spell)

BD is Right On. G&L uses G&G cases for the American G&L's. G&G are a very good cases. They aren't light, but they are solid, and really do protect the bass inside it.

What I like are softcases.

They protect your bass well and they don't damage your car or a door post when you hit it by accident with the case.

SKB makes them but also Stagg.
