Why not? A 62' RI will give you that Big Fat Bottom. (Mowtown style) Where as the 59' should give you a nice warm "fuzzy all over" feeling.
If I was a rich man, I'd have one of each in my stable.

Well, that settles it! I ain't rich but I do have a budget for new basses that should allow me to grab one of these, but probably not until next year. I was willing to spend $3,000 for a new 64 CS Jazz bass but now I'm thinking the 62 reissue Jazz may be more what I want. So instead of one 64 Jazz I could get both a 62 P and 62 Jazz for the same money.

Thanks for all your input!

Excellent info. I've learned more in the month that I've been on this forum than I have in 12 years I've been playing bass geetar.

There's also the fact that the split coil is a true humbucker, and, although not similar to a Gibson style pickup, there is a slight loss of highs compared to a single coil. Jazz pickups, soloed, are true single coils, as is the pre 57 P-bass.

I've never personally been able to tell all that much difference between different split-coil pickups, when in the same bass. Different split-coils in different instruments, yes.

YMMV... :)

I am going to throw in my 2 cents, take it for what it's worth.

First off...all that ANY pickup is........is a coil of wire wrapped around a magnet..not really any rocket science or magic involved. Now the amount of windings will effect tone agreed, but it has the most effect on it's output level..in a nut shell and speaking very generally..less windings will = lower output and deliver a "thinner, potentially brighter more defined" tone..more windings = higher output and a potentially "warmer, muddier" tone. Again this is general, there are other factors involved as far as how a particular pup can effect the tone.

A larger factor directly effecting the tone is the placment of the pup..and if using more then one the different combinations. Then of course the MAIN factor effecting tone is the materials used (mass etc) of the body and neck. And last but not least, playing style (heavy attack, light touch, using a pick or fingers...and even the position where you pluck or pick the strings) will absolutly have an effect on the tone.

Now with all that said, does this mean if you routed a P-bass staggered pup into a Jazz and played it the same way would the Jazz sound like a P-bass? My bet would be no..too many other factors involved..but it would be an interesting experiment.

In closing I will add that I have owned Jazz basses, MusicMan Stingrays and 3 P-basses (an original 70's USA, A mexican special w/ active P-J pup configuration, and my current...a 1999 USA standard P-bass). Nothing else delivers the growl and bottom that I so love about that P-bass so it will most likely forever be my main work horse. And I LOVE the fact that I only have to deal with 1 volume and 1 tone control..and it sounds so great out of the box that I can even leave my amp pretty much flat (needs very little tweaking) and even for recording or into boards at shows, I use a Sans Amp with very little tweaking needed and always can rely on that my sound will kick major butt. Other then the fact that is weights 600 tons and is a little unbalanced for my tastes, I can not say a bad thing about it.
