I would not dare touch a screw or solder joint on the Fender Duck Dunn myself either. There is no telling what they will be worth in another 5 years. You are right they were limited. I wouldn't say rare, but limited. I'm thinking the scenario was possibly 150 for USA and 150 more for Japanese domestic and Europe combined perhaps. There are surely more than 150 in all and you finding number 233 proves that they kept them rolling out longer than 150 copies. That 150 number is thrown around a lot by dealers who have one they are trying to sell you. If there truly were only 150 of them I could not have possibly run across so many of them. There are Fender Japanese basses that I hardly ever see around like the Fender Performer which were made in unlimited numbers. But about once every couple of years I run into a Fender Duck. They show up on eBay way more often than a Performer too.

I have seen about 5 Duck copies in person. I've played 3. I wanted one badly when they first came out.

Not sure if you saw my later post - #0233 is written differently on the headstock than my #0153. 0007 & 0153 are the same. Which I would personally like to extrapolate to mean that 0153 is part of the same batch as 0007 - maybe it was a limited edition of 200? Then the numbers after 200 were made at a different time? PURE SPECULATION on my part of course! :)

And I'll go along with demoting it from "rare" as I put it to something else - how about "somewhat rare?" "Uncommon" at the very least?

They are certainly not valued too highly at this point - I wonder if it has anything to do with the neutral to negative feedback on the internet? Or maybe you are right - they just aren't that rare. But I have seen a couple online that have been modified, so as you suggest, I am keeping it STOCK!

I'd go with "scarce."

I can live with that!

By the way, I got to put the Dunn Sig through its paces last night - had a rehearsal with a new band, playing some soul jazz classics. This is the kind of music I bought this bass for! Stuff like "Sugar" and "Sunshine Alley" by Stanley Turrentine, "Back at the Chicken Shack" by Jimmy Smith, "Moanin'" by Art Blakey, "Cold Duck Time" & "Listen Here" by Eddie Harris, and "Orange Peel" by Reuben Wilson - oh yeah, also the Meters & Grant Green.

The bass was nice and fat through my GK MB112-II - got some nice bark too plucking by the pickup and playing higher up the neck. I recorded some of the songs, but just a single mic picking up all the instruments so the sound isn't ideal - will try and get some better ones next time.

In celebration of being able to finally have an avatar, here's a recording from the aforementioned rehearsal:

Will definitely sound better on good speakers/headphones - mono from a single mic, so the bass is the sound off the amp, which in itself is interesting. Also, this the first time we played together and the first time that we departed from the song structure...

Took the previous recording down, but now I finally have a decent recording of the Dunn Sig!!!

http://soundcloud.com/hieronymous-seven/aka-pdh

Live, I only had it going through my CAJ tube compressor, DI box, then unfortunately I had it going through a mixer just to boost the signal for one of the auxiliary inputs on my MBox - the main ones were being used for the guitar and drum mics. Not sure how much that affected the sound. Sounded good live - just had my amp (Glockenklang Soul Head/Epifani 2X10 w/tweeter off) running flat - but the recording was a little bit thin - so after the fact put it through my Alembic F-2B preamp with bass boosted, slight mid cut, and slight treble cut (didn't need to cut much because it has flats). I think it came out pretty good! I also videotaped it and used some of the sound from the video camera for natural reverb. I've got video that I hope to do something with soon too!

And now I finally pulled a recording of the 70's P!

Similar setup as last time - you're hearing the P-pickup with the filter set to a pretty low frequency, then through CAJ tube compressor, MXR Bass Octave Deluxe at one point in the middle, DI box, direct into ProTools, later enhanced with Alembic F-2B preamp. This time in the room I was playing through my GK MB-112 II.

Just took a pic of the AlFemBic with its most recent mods - Alembic witch-hat knobs and a 3-position Q-switch so I can select how much or little the frequency is boosted where the filter is set (0/+6/+9):

Can hardly wait to take it to rehearsal! Can hardly wait to start gigging for that matter!
