Hey guys-

I'm sorry to clutter up the board with a small-ish topic like this, but the forum's search feature wasn't quite turning up with the responses I was looking for.

Could someone confirm for me that the "Custom Shop '60s P Bass Split Single-coil" pickups in the 2012 American Standard are humbucking? (rw/rp?)

Also, any opinions on those pickups would be appreciated.

I think they're single coil.

Right, yes they're single coil. I wonder if they're reverse-wound/reverse-polarity to cancel 60-cycle hum.

Yeah.. basically 2 small single coils, "split" - 1 coil for the E/A and 1 coil for the D/G. Traditionally wired in series and as far as I know they're hum-cancelling.

The split pickup that is widely known and has been on the P-bass for so many years was designed that way for a reason. It's a split pickup that is hum cancelling, as the single coil that came on the original Precisions was so susceptible to hum, as is normal in single coils. So, in short, if it's a split-P, it cancels hum.

The split-P is a humbucking pickup.

Shhhhh. You are not supposed to call them "humbucking." Humbucking pickup design was patented by Seth Lover for another brand of instruments. The Fender split coil design is "Noise Cancelling."

Its a humbucker. It actually beat Seth Lover's patent but Leo didn't feel like fighting over the principle, AFAIK.

Mr. Lover's patent application for the humbucker was June of 1955.
