I've played both and liked the neck on the Vintage a bit more. The tone was more "old school" in my opinion, maybe I was just in awe of how well it felt. Don't get me wrong, the American Standard was a beautiful bass and if the opportunity should come to own one I wouldn't hesitate at all to pull the trigger.

Stroker, this may help!

Fender did a Japanese Jamerson in ultra limited numbers that was not imported by FMIC to USA as the Duck Dunn model was. It didn't last long and was a very, very short run. I've never seen a CS Jamerson signature bass and wasn't aware the custom shop did them.

The Sunburst 62 AVRI P-Bass is close to a Jamerson. There likely will never be a Jamerson signature unless and until the Funk Machine is recovered. There is still hope. Jaco's "Bass of Doom" eventually up.

The American Standard and 1962 American Vintage Reissue Precision Bass are very different animals. Both are worthy but sound different from each other. The pickup in the 62 RI is a brighter pickup which Fender tones down some at least by using a 0.10uF cap instead of the 0.05uF cap usually associated with a passive Precision tone circuit. I'd rather have both.

Hey Dave I wasn't aware that the Limited Jamerson model was from Custom Shop until I read it here:

That is informative. Still never saw one though. Wonder if they are better than the 62 AV RI P-Bass? Would be nice to compare them wouldn't it?

I've never seen one either,....I've only heard about them (kinda like an urban legend..)
since seeing the 62 AV RI P-Bass on Musicians Friend ( thanks for posting the link Oxfan)
My curiosity has been piqued.... :)

Just chiming in on this one -

How is the neck on the AVRI? I've never played one and I don't have access to one before ordering, and I'm also going back and forth between a new AS and the AVRI.

Does AVRI has a wider neck, with a larger fretboard radius? Seems like most opinions seem to favor it.

Well the 62 AV RI P-Bass measures 1.75"at the nut (the American Standard P-Bass is 1.65")
as you know from this thread James Jamerson played a 62 P-Bass (very similar to this re-issue).....I've heard that Jasmerson's bass had a chunky neck....not surprizing.

I'm sure the neck Radius on the 62 AVRI P-Bass is 7.25"..( sounds similar to my Steve Harris P-Bass as it's 1.75" at the nut with a 7.25" neck radius with a chunky maple neck & fretboard) the neck radius on the American Standard is 9.25"........to answer your question the American Vintage re-issue would have a wider neck.
