I am looking to get a P Bass and am considering a 2102 American Standard or a 1962 Vintage Reissue. I was wondering if both would sound similar and with me a beginner of about one year playing if it would make a difference

Thanks

I'd place your order for one now. You can probably get the first one. 2102 Isn't that far away.

In the Year 2102 will there be any bass players left alive?
Will we know if they survived?
do these words sound quite contrived?

In the Year 2525................

At least you don't have to wait until 2112 like Rush did...LOL  ...seriously though I think both basses would have a different tone as The '62 American Vintage re-issue is a Jazz bass with vintage single coil pickups ( are you sure this is the bass you were referring to?).....this bass would have more tonal options & the 2012 Standard P-bass has Custom Shop '60's pickups..I haven't heard one yet but I'm guessing it would have a warmer tone.... :)
Would it make a difference?.....yes it would as they are two very different basses & it depends on what you're looking for........since you're looking for a P-bass I'd go with the 2012 Standard P-bass.......it's a lot of bang for the buck..

Actually there is a '62 American Vintage Precision, what the James Jamerson artist model would be if there was one.

True but I thought he was referring to current available P-Bass models from Fender..
is the Jamerson model at musicians friend a used bass or left over stock? The Jamerson Bass was a 1990's limited edition from The Custom Shop. I liked the '62 re-issue American Vintage Jamerson P-Bass & it appears they're still available to some extent......

It's not an actual "James Jamerson", just my sarcastic shot at Fender for not having one available. This is a new bass that they stock, at least I think so. Got to play a couple in the past few years, they are awesome and the price has come down.

If I had to choose between a Vintage and an American Standard, I'd go with the Vintage, Sunburst and Rosewood are my favorites.

Just went to the Fender product page, no American Vintage Precision, they must just have stock. Too bad, it was a great bass.

Haha!!...Good one Oxfan ! :) .......I went to the Musicians Friend link & my eyes opened wide......it is a nice vintage looking bass... :) I agree Fender really should still have a Jamerson model...but then again the Jaco model didn't make an appearance until 1999.....long after Jaco popularized the Fretless & had sadly passed away...anyway I'd also choose the '62 Vintage re-issue model over the 2012 Standard now that I know it's possible to get one.. :D

In all reality, when the time comes, and it's long overdue, with the price the way it is, I'd get the vintage. Should the price be the original $1599.99 or whatever, I'd gladly buy an American Standard. I have yet to see any that weren't great. The only downside to the American Standard is, I'd have to put covers and a thumbrest on. The Vintage comes with them unattached, as well as a tolex case, strap, and cable. The AS has a nicer case though.

Thanks a lot for getting my G.A.S. all fired up again, James!

As far as I know, and you should check the specs to be sure. The new Am Std. P uses the same pick up. So the basses should sound fairly similar. However, things like body, or fretboard wood will change that slightly, along with which tone cap is used. I'm assuming the AVS 62 P has the vintage tone circuit, and the Am. Std. uses something more modern. Also, you can get down to the nitty gritty about finishes and which resonated better.

In the end, I'd think if the basses use the same pick up, then you'd probably want to make your decision on which neck plays better for you. (ie: modern radius, frets, and B width neck, or vintage radius, frets, and C width neck)

Just my opinion, of course.

You bring up some good things to consider "King of Pain" & let's not forget the 2012 P-Bass has the High Mass Vintage bridge that also allows for string through body or top load..

Yep, another good point. When I play flats and fingerstyle. I definitely prefer string through body. However, I've never been a fan of the Fender high-mass bridge offerings. I find the BAII and BAIII much better. Though, from what I hear the BAIII is already a thing of the past.

All that being said. I have played both models of basses, and I would definitely go with the AVS.

If you're not a fan of Fender's HMV Bridge you could always swap it out for a Hipshot A style bidge that offers the string through body option....
