I removed the clear film off the pickups.. but pieces/ remaining pieces are still stuck under between/ under the pickguard and pickups. Should I just leave the remaining plastic film pieces?

okay--- loosen the screws one at a time and take care not to scratch the pickguard and use some tweezers or a toothpick and gently remove the film that is in the pickguard hole. The plastic film does not go under the pickguard. It's just on top. When you tighten the pickguard screw back down make sure not to go too tight. Too tight leaves ugly indents around the hole. You want it nice and flush looking so tighten accordingly.. To remove the film under the volume and treble pot nuts you must take the strings off the bass- remove the knobs- take out all the pickguard screws-- pull up the guard only enough to be able to grasp the pot from underneath the guard - (( don't pull the pickguard up too far because there is a ground wire attached to one of the pots and you don't want to pull on that wire)) ---loosen the nut and make sure the pot does not move when you do-- remove film under the nut and tighten it back down making sure the pot doesn't move--- repeat for the tone pot. Do the same for the input making sure it doesn't move . I always spread out a rag wherever I think the pickguard or pots may scratch the body if they may come in contact with the body as I work on it. Use the same loosening method for the pickup screws as for the pickguard screws. Before you hack around with the pickup screws-- measure the height of the pickup from the face of the pickguard to the top of the pickup cover so you can put it back where it was before you started.

An American P bass is always a good choice. If you are just starting out I would recommend learning how to set up and intonate and adjust your bass. Buy a good guitar repair and set up book and learn everything in it. You will save a ton of money and your bass will sound good all the time. Plus you won't look like a rookie when some bass player comes along and see's your bridge all jacked up looking . If you are an experienced bassist please forgive me for assuming that you may not be. If you are a wise guy who just posted to get that explanation above-- well that's a whole different deal. Take care and keep Rockin', and please don't use flatwound strings or Badass bridges.

Actually, like the plastic on new car seats, it should be removed by the DEALER as part of the PREP during the post sale setup. Ahhhh, those were the days.

I've seen where the film was left on for years and it left permanent marks on the p guard--- well I guess you could wet sand and buff if you are good at it.

It is also possible the gasses given off by the adhesive on the plastic could cause corrosion of the electronics or deterioration of the finish.

You can also use a Scotchbrite pad (plastic dish scrubbie) to gently ease adhesive residue off.

Yes - glue is always "out gassing" kind of like Oxfan.

Wouldn't a Scotch Brite pad lay waste to a pickguard? Then you'd really have to wet sand and buff. I could do that.

Scotchbrite pads are pretty abrasive and should never be used while the pickguard is on the instrument. For deep scratches or light gouges, they would be the ideal solution.

The plastic should peel right off. I used nylon tweezers to remove mine. If there is residue, try a water dampened microfiber towel first. Water is an excellent solvent and isn't likely to damage guitar finishes.

Pickguards are meant to get scratched up. That's their whole purpose.

Yes, but many people prefer to keep their instruments as pristine as possible for as long as possible. Others don't care or slap stickers all over them.
