there is such a thing as taking off the bridge cover and looking at how whacked out the bridge is. Also- did you take a picture of the bass inside a car? A flogging is in order if you did. HA! :D

I had the bridge cover off this weekend and it appeared to be OK but what do I know, I'm just a bass player ;)

And yes, if you read one of my previous posts, you will know why I took the pics in my car!
Please no flogging! My back is already sore from the 4 hour gig I played on Saturday with this elephant of a bass pulling me down.

My brother (also a bassist) had this bass before me for a little while and he thinks there might have been a little work done to repair the pickups or a pot or something of that nature but wasn't 100% sure.

I snapped this picture of one of the pots.. does it give us any info that we can use?

Looks like it reads: P885 250K 0508

:D there's a site all these guys here go to for the pot codes etc. It's a good one but I frogrot what it is. I'm sure they will come onto here and fill you in. I can say I have never taken a picture of a bass in a car. What kind of perversion is that anyway? Instaed of a flogging a thrashing may be more in order.

Serial numbers moved from metal neck plate to headstock decal in 1976. So if there is anything left that is original those parts are 76 or later. Due to sloppy neck joint I'm figuring this is more like 78 or 79. It is also possible this neck is undersized and not the body's fault. Some aftermarket necks are undersized so they'll fit anything.

The pot code given is not an original pot and therefore no help. The correct pot would start with the numbers "137." The Fender stamped tuners would be appropriate for late 70's. The solder joints are not original. There might be date codes on the back of the pickups on the bottom of the pickup flatwork. Or they could be aftermarket like the neck. Maybe the other pot is original and has a good code. I think that is the walnut finish over alder used through the 70's as a custom color which was a "thick skin" finish. It does tend to get darker as time passes. Four piece bodies are nothing unusual nor undesirable. I would not call a 4 piece body the bottom of the barrel as it does get worse.

This is a parts bass. So it really doesn't matter what "year" it once was. If it plays and sounds OK then it might have some value as a player. Figure $500 to $800 at the most if the pickups are real.
