I have seen them in stores but I have never played one so I don't know how they sound. Naturally you should try before you buy. Personally, I don't like the way they look, particularly the single pick-up and pickguard, but to each their own. I have two P-basses and enjoy playing them both. Play around with the 51' and if you don't like it, Fender has alot of basses to choose from. Hopefully you can find one to fit your wants and needs.

You should get something you like. As far as 1 p/u goes, most P basses have the 1 split p/u. As far as sound, you make "your" sound by your style of playing, eq, amp, the bass is just the tool to make your sound.

I play a 51RI P bass and it definitely doesn't lack in the horsepower department. More pick ups doesn't mean more balls. A jazz bass has a weaker signal then either style P bass and it has two pups. Not to judge a book by it's cover, but if you're looking for something with some serious balls in the P bass department try the Big Block Precision Bass. The 18V pre-amp makes it a monster.

Yeah I agree with TheKingofPain -- the single P-Bass p/u is one of the biggest sounds in the bass world! Fat, full, round, bass tone!

I personally don't like the tone of active pickups, however, I stick with the traditional passive basses.

I agree, I prefer the passive vintage sound, but I had a BB P bass for awhile and if this cat digs metal, it's a pretty hard sound to beat. For an odd combo, and for some of the growliest darkest tone imaginable a BB P with old grimmey Fender Flats is one of the coolest sounds I've ever heard.
