My dad recently gave me one of his old bass guitars but I have no idea what kind of guitar it is or what year it is. Image

2002 Standard Precision Bass. The work horse of many a band. Enjoy!

BTW, she looks like she could just use a little tlc. Give her a good wipe down with some mist n' wipe if you can find any and some lemon oil on the fretboard. It'll do wonders. Otherwise, looks like a great bass!

King of Pain is correct it is a 2002 model Fender Standard Precision Bass. Model years run on fiscal years. So it could have been made as early as July 1, 2002 and as late as June 30, 2003. These were good ones! Hard case too! Sweet! I have an '04 in 3 color sunburst that I really like a lot. That is all the bass most people will ever need.

Mid 2002/early 2003: the period during which the cheesy Strat knobs were replaced with genuine USA knurled chrome flat-tops. :)

Those flat-tops do give it a more manly appearance. I never liked the strat knobs for some reason, at least on basses i've seen them on.

My first Fender is/was identicle to that, aside from the knobs - Mine is from around 1998/99 (I'll have to check the SN later to confirm), back when they had the tacky plastic Strat knobs on them.

I've since changed mine out for proper chrome knurled p-bass knobs, installed a slightly beefier Gotoh top-load bridge, tort pickguard, and the Fender AVRI ("original") pickup (the one used in the AVRI '62). I've got a set of Fender 'vintage style' reverse tuners (also same as the AVRI) on order. Guess it'll be my poor mans' '62 style P (aside from the bridge) LOL.

I've always liked the way it plays and it's a great sounding and very resonant bass - not just for an MIM.

Definitely clean that beast up and enjoy it! And those strings - yuck lol. Time for a change!
