Here's my latest Precision. Made in Japan 1993, Has P bass lace sensor pickups & piezo in the bridge. Nice light weight great japanese workmanship. There were 3 similar models. The HMT was same body but had a "hockey stick" headstock. The other A/E model which seems more plentiful is the fretless version. Mine here is fretted. Body has no contours. Strings load thru back. Volume, tone & blend knobs.

that is really nice. I need one. I saw a version that at a guitar show that had a regular bridge. The price was good but for whatever reason I didn't pull the cord on it. I regret that. I went back to the guitar show the next year and of course it wasn't there. Either way I like the one you got.

Here's a photo of the metal head cousin to the A/E called an HMT & that IS a Fender logo on the headstock. I had this back about 2 years ago. I got it cheap from a dealer who was sick of looking at it I bought it to resell & get ups some cash for a another bass.

Question for those of you with these instruments or who have had them previously. I've had a report that some of these had MADE IN USA neckplates but had JAPAN decals as country of origin. Anyone have one like that?

Brother Dave, There is another A/E P Bass on ebay. It clearly shows photos of the headstock & neck plate. The headstock has Made In Japan & the neckplate says Fender USA. So I know of at least 3 instuments (2 I owned/own) & this one now on ebay that have the same Japan/USA markings. I doubt that 3 of these instruments would have had parts changed. Follow this link to view the one on ebay. It is the more common fretless one & the guy is wanting in excess of $1000 which he probably won't get seeing as how these are usually going for $800 or less. The HMTs with the hockey stick headstocks sell for $600 or so & the A/E are a little more I paid a little over $700 for mine. I am not going to pay $300+ more for a fretless one! I'd like to find a fretless one in a different color. They came in natural, sunburst (3 color), black, & cherry tranlucent red. Maybe other colors? These are all I have seen.

I'd think the hockey stick headstock version being scarcer in the USA would be the more expensive, but you are saying the opposite is the case, correct?

Actually; I was watching ebay for quite a while looking for a fretted A/E & alot of HMT's The hockey stick heastock models show up on ebay. If you go to completed auctions on ebay & just type in Fender HMT or Fender A/E. You will see about the same number of items but alot of the A/E listings will be flatops. The HMT will have some tele models. The Precision HMTs recently on ebay went for $500 & $650. There was a nice fretless sunburst A/E that went for $1300! Unusual compared to what I have seen them going for. The $1100 one is on his 2nd go with no buyers. I guess traditional Fender players prefer the traditional headstock. The A/E shows up 9 times out of 10 fretless which may keep the price low. I watched ebay for along time for a fretted A/E & ended up finding the one I bought locally. I love playing this bass! All the models I have seen have made in Japan on the headstock & USA on the neckplate?? A Mystery?

I was looking at the completed listings on ebay that I refered to in my provious entry in this thread. One of the listings stated that the body was made in USA & neck imported from Japan? What do you think about this, Brother Dave?

Re: the "made in Japan" with "USA" on the neckplate - I thought maybe it could just mean that they were made specifically for the US market? I went trolling through the Twang catalogs - those are the catalogs of Fender Japan for the Japanese market - and did actually find them in Japan too on page 18-19:

http://stratomaniac.com/en/twang-fender-squier-jv-mij-katalog-1982-1983/brochures-guitar-catalog-1982-1997/book/49-fender-japan-katalog-twang-1993/1-kataloge-broschueren-fujigen-1982-1997

Maybe the ones sent to the US were given the USA neckplate to distinguish them?

And it's definitely fun looking through these catalogs - I had no idea there was a Bass VI reissue in Japan - I found one in the 1993 part 2 catalog - we only ever hear about the '95-'96 ones that were distributed in the US. I lived in Japan from '82-'88 and again from '02-'06 and still have some of my catalogs from those times...

Ive got one that looks just like the original posters.. but with a Tele type headstock..
But it only says Made in USA on it (neck plate), that I can see..
Does not seem to be a ton of info on these cool basses.. With spruce tops and f holes!

I don't know what to think about saying both "MADE IN USA" on the Neckplate and "MADE IN JAPAN" on the neck. I always thought these were Japanese made. I'm wondering about the neck plates. Will research it some. Could be the old switcharoo. It happens.

Wow, I remember those! It's been a long time since I've seen one. Cool bass.
