I am looking at a nice 1990's Japanese made P Bass. It has lace sensor pickups in it. I have never heard a bass with lace sensors nor do I know anything about these type of pickups. Can anyone give me insite about how they sound & what is different about them. I notice you don't see them on newer basses either.

They sound like single coils, because they are. Even the P-Bass version is very open, responsive and airy. In a split P the coils are wired in a north/south humbucker arrangement but it still has that almost active sound even in a passive bass. Lace pickups are very intricate to build with about 4 times as many magnetic poles per pickup as conventional pickups and this means greater sensitivity. With so many poles in play they can use weaker magnetic material and weaker magnets mean less pull by the pickup on the strings which allows the strings to ring out truer. Pretty nice pickups but pretty expensive also going for about the same or a little more than custom wound pickups from Lindy Fralin or Curtis Novak. They sound about like a 62 Reissue P-Bass pickup, only hotter.

Once again Brother Dave is a wealth of knowledge. Thanks Brother Dave. Since I haven't seen them on recent guitar I figured they were Bombs. Maybe too expensive to keep using them. Thanks again Brother Dave.

I know I would strongly consider one if I needed another P-Bass. An interesting thing about them is that the Lace Sensor P/J set is PRECISELY matched to the decimal point, which is a balance accuracy level even the custom shops can't seem to hit.

Fender used Lace Sensor Pickups in the Plus versions of both the P and J for the entire run of the Plus models. This was one of my favorite Fender P-Bass designs. George Blanda was really on a roll when he designed it.
