Hi, I completely adore my Antigua P bass but can I make this bass sound like these two recordings? I play through an Ampeg mini SVT.

It's not you. That's the problem with allot of the new "Young Guy" rock. Ten tons of effects and several layers of guitar ( some tuned down to C) and vocals on top with more effects leaving the bass and drums buried in the mix. I guess that's the way you get that bass sound. What?

I agree Stroker Vance......I guess I was just being polite ...(Being Canadian & all......that's what we're known for... ) In truth I couldn't hear the Bass at all......there's no bottom end what so ever...........as opposed to when you throw on a recording by bands like Yes, Led zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Queen.....etc (& even still today...bands like Rush) you'd instantly hear the foundation... Chris Squire has always had a solid kick $@! sound & talk about tight (with drummer Alan White) or (Rush'..Lee & Peart) Amazing :)
This new stuff......Hmmm I don't know about this new stuff.(not sold on it)

So do Reel Big Fish and Streetlight Manifesto. I'm a Clash guy at heart though.

Classic Punk P tone is Dee Dee Ramone without a doubt. As you guys mentioned Paul Simonson from The Clash gives you a good example of how to start at that punk tone and technique and branch it out to more layered music. The later Sex Pistols lines where Jonesy used Sid's P had some great tone, even though they may not be the best lines. Even Sid's line on Bodies was a great example of that late 70's P tone even though he was a bit of a mess.

I have to admit, I can't stand emocore or whatever they call that music that you linked. There are a lot of things that get called "punk" now days. :?

I hear ya, the original late 70's British Punk movement & the Punk/alternative scene that was going on in New York at the same time....(Bands like The Ramones, Patti Smith, Talking Heads, the early stuff from Blondi, ..... bands that played CBGB.s) all had a message, they were also anti establishment....even Guns 'N'Roses from the mid 80's.....
Hmmm?? sad thing is most of them became the society they were protesting against..

Yep, early Misfits were great, too. The Stooges, The New York Dolls. The Damned, Siouxsie and The Banshees. Lots of great stuff.

As far as the society they were protesting? I agree, but aren't well all a bit guilty of that, though? Eventually the collectivists will either beat you into submission or you'll end up dead. Sometimes I'm not sure which is worse.

Hell, Last punk band I was in we basically robbed the horror punk schitck, but did it without all the Misfits' make up and gags. Aimed dead center for the late 70's Bowery sound. We used modern "hollywood" horror as inspiration. Took a name from an obscure kids cartoon reference.

All to scam free beer, some pocket cash, and play music we didn't need to practice. Hell, I don't think there was a song in our catalogue that took more then 5 minutes to write. We actually posted a song on our page we recorded on the first time we ever played it. People ate it up! They even thought we were from California, even though if you knew anything about punk you'd definitely know we were east coast within the first 4 bars.

Cash from chaos, right? It's a swindle... :?

Well said yet again "King of Pain" & thanks for including The Stooges, New York Dolls, The Damned & Siouxsie & the Banshees ( I was thinking of The Stooges & the Dolls when I was writing my post)...... & regarding becoming the society they protested I also think that as we age we tend to see the world with a different set of eyes or in other words we mellow in our angst.
Just as many of the anti establishment peace & love Hippies of the late 60's & early 70's became Yuppies in the 80's...
I remember as a teen in the late 70's & early 80's when all this new music was happening ...including the new wave of Metal bands like Iron Maiden, The Scorpions, Judas Priest, a renewed Black Sabbath with Dio on vocals, Van Halen & even Motorhead......there was a lot of exciting stuff going on in all genre's of music.....it blows my mind how bands like Iron Maiden & Rush are still relevant in 2012/2013 & both are still releasing recordings with solid tracks on them.........it's just plain awesome... :)

I don't think those bands are relevant to todays music because they're fresh and new.. They're just still around and there's alot of 50+ people who liked them back in the 70's and 80's when they were getting a buzz on. Livin' in the past musically is what allot of that is about, So many young guys tell me how they grew up with their parents listening to Journey, the Police , Bad Co. etc.,etc., and how they really like all the Classic stuff .

None of Classic rock has changed. It's still the same music unchanged since the 70's. What it to me is-- the music was really great and the stuff these days especially- is all about industrial radio in the mainstream ( not counting sattelite radio etc) of which- not a whole lot of it has the staying power of the music from the Classic era. Of course that's opinion- I know. I'm still hoping for the next Beatles or Elvis. I don't think that will ever happen again unfortunately.

What I think about is--- if I were in the 70's listening to music from 40 years earlier ( in comparison to people listening to Classic rock today) I'd be groovin' out to "Meyers Eat Oats and Does Eat Oats and Little Lambs Eat Ivy" and " Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree With Anyone Else But Me" and "If I Only Had A Brain" from the Wizard of Oz. WHAT????? This makes me think there's somethings' a bit amiss with the music today. Who's fault is that? Not sure.

I've been in bands playing Classic Rock since it was not Classic. I guess I'm biased by that. I'm in a spot where I just about can't stand it anymore. 40 years of "I Can't Get Enough Of Your Love" ???? AAARRRRGGGGG!!!!!! And you wonder why I'm nuts????

I totally agree with you with why some bands are still around & the fact that a good chuck of the people who see them are over 50 & living in the past musically.....case in point I went to see Roger Waters perform The Wall this past May, A good chuck of the crowd was over 50 & some of these guys were 65 yr old hippies,......nothing wrong with it but it was an observation & then there's Paul McCartney who played a Sold out Show at BC Place Stadium here in Vancouver this past Sunday night ...any way the local TV crews were there getting peoples reaction after the show & once again a good chunk of the crowd was 50 to 68yrs of age.......once again, nothing wrong with this & it's to be expected from a guy who's been around as log as I've been on the planet (I'm 48)

& with regard to songs like: Can't get enough of your love, Back in Black, Can't get no Satisfaction, Sweet Home Alabama, BaBa O'Rielly, Zep's Rock N Roll.....etc
I refer to over player songs in this vein as Offenders.........they've been overly shoved down out throats for the past 3 & 4 decades it's Offensive....

I hear ya. My last band we used to cover Knockin' on Heaven's Door. I used to cringe everytime we got to that point in the set list. Just thinking about how many times I've played it. Yet all the drunks in the bar sang along. Every. Damn. Time. Sigh... :(

Oh I hear ya right back ...... I played in a band that played Van Halen's version of ...Gag!! You Really Got me" & we'd get the same reaction ......Drunks going wild.... :?
& Classic Rock Stations don't help matters either..........they play the same stuff over & over & over refusing to play lesser know but equally good strong songs from all these Artists,.....take a band like the Rolling Stones for instance...we're talking 5 decades of music but the same 20 songs get played on the radio.
