There is nothing funnier to me than someone with a high dollar USA made axe that they can't play worth a flip.

On the other hand when I see someone really, really talented playing a student class or worse instrument it makes the player even more impressive. Summer before last I saw a guy at the SC Peach Festival in Gaffney (home of the PEACHOID on I-85) playing a sunburst Squier Strat into a Dean Markley amp about the size of lunch box and he was an awesome and highly skilled player. I was probably the only person there that even noticed it was a Squier.

Well as I've always said,...it's all in the hands (& of course you've also got to have heart & Mind).

The made in the US, short scale and under $1,200 are some serious constraints and you might not be able to accomplish all three without looking for either used or foreign. For what it's worth, I've played:

- Epi Viola bass (Hofner clone), decent construction, nice woody sound and an easy neck for short fingers. Downside: make in Korea, but reasonably well made. On the other hand, very light and easy on the shoulders.
- Fender Mustang: one of my favorites, you can really fly on it though mine isn't US made. Downside: relatively low output pickups and the tuning likes to wander. (The pups can be replaced, but my guitar tech has done all he can to lock in the tuning.)
- Epi EBO or EB3 clone ... less than the Gibson price (not US made either) but I've heard a few in the field. Sound okay to me.
- SG Bass: mine's well made, but I've heard that the quality dropped after the first year of the reissue, so look for an early re-issue on line. Short scale, all US made and doesn't suffer from the mute, semi-dead sound of early EBOs (such as the one I had back in the day).
- Jazz bass: thinner neck (rather than short scale) may work for her and you should be able to find a used US made for under $1,200. I primarily use a J, so I'd lean that way, particularly in that a well kept US J will last her a long time. But it will also be the heaviest of the options I've mentioned ... have to watch for shoulder damage! I'm a small male who started off with a heavy, long scale P at around age 15 and the reaching and weight did me no favors.

Sounds like the BF is just a gear snob who compensates for how your daughter can actually play by keying on something irrelevant ... what she's playing.

Thank you for your help! I wanted her to get the JAzz Bass.. I love the P and J bass..I think the boyfriend is on his way out..Shes been talking to some kid who is a drummer..(good lord) Ill post a picture of her and her MUSIC MAN STING RAY..

At the end of the day the Music-man Sting Ray Classic is a pretty good choice, (& it's mint green too!!.. :) ) she's still getting a Bass that Leo Fender designed....some even say it was the next generation P-Bass with a Humbucker.....the Classic also has a Slab body
I've often thought about getting one myself..... I'd probably get the Sterling Classic Ray only because I already have 6 Fenders & an Ibanez .... I've read & heard that the Indonesian made Sterling Rays are well built, on par & also half the price of their big brother Sting Ray Basses........ :)
