There's a Black Hofner Violin bass featured in the gear section of the new issue of Bassplayer " with Steve Harris" on the cover.

Hofners are 30", short scale.

First off I want to THANK all of you. You guys are great!! (And funny). My daughters boyfriend was trying to impress her with a poorly played Green Day song. She the took HIS bass and ripped off a perfect "Sunshine of your love" rendition. He looked a little emabarassed. Any way I think the Jag idea is good AND a SG faded black (Ugh) I loved the Ebay mustang ..VERY VERY nice. Ill keep you posted and will post a picture of her when we get it..

You just have to remind her that guys she dates will grow up to be just like you, or worse. At her age, she's looking at you differently when she was three and will look at you differently at twenty five. You have to use whatever you can to maintain peace! :D

One more thing, I'm only about four hours away, lots of woods nearby, i'll loan you my shovel and, I have a gallon of walnut oil, squirrels love it!

He was trying to impress her by playing Green Day??? & poorly at that??..... :?
I think you should consider Oxfan's shovel & walnut oil idea....

I think any of the 3 Jaguar basses that Fender offers would be a good idea & the necks on the Deluxe & Modern player models are Jazz Bass necks, they're thinner than a P Bass neck, ...your daughter may like the Jaguar neck...........I've also noticed more younger alternative bands using
this bass......I've even concidered getting one just to round out the arsenal.. :D

Hofner basses, the Beatle bass, are 30" scale, or whatever that is in centimeters.

Hey now... :x

LOL!

Shame you're against Gibson, I saw a Gibby flying V bass that was pretty cool that was right in your price range, I just didn't like it BECAUSE it was short scale.

But what do I know, being a Jazz Bass player and all... :D

hahahaha, all in good fun.

I agree with your take on the Gibson. While I would never play a Gibson personally, I wouldn't stop either of my sons from getting one if that was the instrument that "fit" them best.

Wow, Gibson manages to take everything I hate about modern bass necks and push the envelope and then tries to charge you out the butt for it! Too skinny and too flat. No thanks! That bass makes a J bass look like a Cadillac to me! The buckers look great, though. However, I can get that tone in a Blacktop P bass for a lot less money with a much better neck.

Yeah the Gibson EB Bass has just been released .......I'm on the Fence with this one,......I kinda like the body & the pickups but I'm not a fan of the glued on neck or the Head stock,.......if I were to get another J style bass that wasn't a Fender I'd go with the Lakland Daryl Jones model, or a Sadowsky J style .

The made in the US, short scale and under $1,200 are some serious constraints and you might not be able to accomplish all three without looking for either used or foreign. For what it's worth, I've played:

- Epi Viola bass (Hofner clone), decent construction, nice woody sound and an easy neck for short fingers. Downside: make in Korea, but reasonably well made. On the other hand, very light and easy on the shoulders.
- Fender Mustang: one of my favorites, you can really fly on it though mine isn't US made. Downside: relatively low output pickups and the tuning likes to wander. (The pups can be replaced, but my guitar tech has done all he can to lock in the tuning.)
- Epi EBO or EB3 clone ... less than the Gibson price (not US made either) but I've heard a few in the field. Sound okay to me.
- SG Bass: mine's well made, but I've heard that the quality dropped after the first year of the reissue, so look for an early re-issue on line. Short scale, all US made and doesn't suffer from the mute, semi-dead sound of early EBOs (such as the one I had back in the day).
- Jazz bass: thinner neck (rather than short scale) may work for her and you should be able to find a used US made for under $1,200. I primarily use a J, so I'd lean that way, particularly in that a well kept US J will last her a long time. But it will also be the heaviest of the options I've mentioned ... have to watch for shoulder damage! I'm a small male who started off with a heavy, long scale P at around age 15 and the reaching and weight did me no favors.

Sounds like the BF is just a gear snob who compensates for how your daughter can actually play by keying on something irrelevant ... what she's playing.
