Wow, would you like to adopt me?! Honestly, I'd just take her to a decent shop and let her try a bunch of different shortscale basses in your price range that meet her criteria. (made in the US)

See if she likes any of them better then the Mustang Bass. (that's what Way is playing now, right?) It's a shame that her Fender experience was a Squier. Comparing a Squier to even a midgrade Hofner or an actual Gibson isn't going to be much of a contest.

Has she tried any of the Jaguar basses? They are medium scale (32 inches) and the Pawn Shop Reverse Jag looks like a pretty decently made bass. (though not US, to be honest does Hofner make one here?)

In any event, she's a lucky young lady and best of luck to you both on finding the right bass!

Thank you and yes ill adopt ya!! All muscians welcome! I got her the Mikey Way mustang because she wanted to "Try" the Bass. She ended up being pretty darn good. I think the Hoofner bass was because of the Beatles. I am not going to spend over 2000 for it. Her boyfriend plays a J Bass US Made and told her her Squire wasnt any good. I wouldnt mind having a good short scale around for me to "borrow" once in a while. I am a Fender guy and would hate to go and get a Gibson. But hey for 799 to 899 I cant really go wrong.

I hear ya. I'm a P bass guy and I don't like anything else. However, if it's her bass then she she should probably play what she digs. Even if it's a ... ::shudder:: Gibson. If you can snag her an American made bass for 8-900 bucks then I agree you're doing pretty good and it's worth a shot if she like it. Though I might caution her on listening to J bass players when it comes to bass advice.

Daughters! They all have a way of wrapping us around their little finger while they torment us.

While I'm a Fender guy all the way, i always pick up one of these, when they have them in stock. This time of year, 15% off is everywhere, putting you at $1189.99.

"King of Pain" beat me to the punch, but I agree with him.......why not have her try the MIM Reverse Jaguar it's a cool looking short scale bass with Humbuckers.....& tell your daughter that the price of a guitar means nothing,......if you like the sound & feel of your instrument that's all that counts........Remember Eddie Van Halen recorded the first couple of Van Halen records with a couple of $200.00 Charvel guitars......( that would probably be $450.00 in 2012 dollars......still cheap though) I Believe bassist Micheal Anthony was using Charvel Basses in Van Halen's early days...... ( Charvel !! now owned by Fender & they no longer make Basses).. :(

Keep your eye on ebay or go to GBase you should be able to snag a vintage mustang bass for what your willing to pay. If you get someone with 100% rating & good feedback you can buy an older USA bass. Maybe even a racing strip one!

OK. Looks like racing stripes are out of your price range but check this out. Will a little buckle rash bother her?

I played the Reverse Jaguar. it was great! The fit and finish was beautiful, the neck was sweet! The tone was awesome. Of course the price is right, BUT, you lose a lot of frets, for some that isn't an issue, for me it is.

Definitely get her to try one out, but before you do, get rid of the boyfriend, that just leads to marriage and then you'll want to take him into the woods and beat him with a shovel, bury him up to the neck and let the squirrels have him. Now THAT works for me!

Oxfan always the man with a plan!!....... I agree with his plans for the boyfriend, a smart boyfriend would of shut his face or better yet he would of encouraged your daughter to continue with the Squier Mikey Way Bass regardless of where it comes from.......
I'd still definately try to steer her in the direction of a MIM reverse Jaguar....tell her that the Mexican factory may be outside the USA but it's only 2 hours away from the American plant, & tell her the wood & in some cases some of the parts come from the States.

Or even though they're not short scale ...how about one of the regular Deluxe Jaguar Basses .....it's MIJ & good quality........it's gonna be tough finding a short scale MIA Fender Bass unless you look on ebay for vintage..Mustangs....I read a review of the current MIM Fender Mustang bass in Bassplayer Magazine this summer & it got a good review, ...urge her to try one......Good Luck.

+1000 on the appraisal of the Mexican Plant. Ensenada churns out some really top quality work. Went bass hunting for split coils this past weekend it took me all day but I finally found a Classic 70's. I've been harsh on Fender for the lack of vintage radius on these models.

However, I have to say I finally found a bass I liked better then my 51RI. The neck on it was to die for even with the modern radius. The fit and finish was incredible. The frets were actually better then my CIJ 51RI which is saying something! Great vintage P tone.

Plus, unlike my actual 78 P bass that I used to have. This one didn't weigh 13.5lbs! Unfortunately they only had it in Sunburst. I hate to part with my 51, but I need to swap my stable and this bass blew me away. So I'll likely be trading in my 51 soon on an Oly WHite 70's once they are off backorder.

To hold me over I scooped up a killer Black Friday deal on MF for a "gently used" antigua P. They have the same neck specs, and I believe the same pups. All should be right with the world very soon!

Again, Before buying her the Gibson or a Hofner I would definitely ask her to try the Jag.

I have 2x MIJ Jazz Basses, 1x MIJ P-Bass, 2x MIA Jazz Basses & I recently bought a MIM Reggie Hamilton Jazz bazz.....I already posted here on the Lounge that the workmanship on this bass is on par with MIA basses IMO & there's also American parts on this unit......I love the satin finish on the neck.....I also used to be somewhat scepticle regarding Mexican made Fenders but after trying this bass & a couple of Road worns, the now MIM Geddy Lee Bass & the Roger Waters P Bass...I gotta say Fender Mexico is doing an overall good job.....however a few weeks ago I got to compare a MIM Marcus Miller Jazz Bass with my 2009 MIJ Marcus Miller Jazz bass (both with natural fininsh) & I have to say I thought my MIJ model had a slight edge....my bass came with the battery compartment on the front of the bass (just like Marcus' bass) & now on the MIM models the battery is accessed from the back of the body.....Mine also came with slightly aged white neck binding & aged pearl block markers, the binding & block markers on the MIM models are not aged.
I believe my 2009 came with Gotoh tuners (I've been told that Gotoh parts are on most MIJ models)......anyway the MIM Marcus bass now comes with Fender Stamped tuners........Both basses have the 3 bolt " F" neck plate with Micro tilt, BADASS II Bridge & Vintage pickups.....though I think mine has American Vintage pickups as for a while Fender was shipping American Vintage pick ups to Japan for the Artist models....both basses have Maple neck & fretboard with Ash Body..... I thought the MIM Marcus Bass played & sounded good but I think I prefer the more authentic vintage look of mine & I thought my bass had more balls ..sound wise.....but thats me.. :)

personally, I'd go with a hofner CT violin bass.

not the super crappy icon or the expensive 62 model.

great sound, and playability.

my dad snagged one up for about 700$.

This brings up a question. Aren't Hofner's medium scale anyhow? I thought they were 32 inch just like the Jags? Isn't short scale 30 or 28? I have a beat up 70's Musicmaster stuffed in a closet upstairs that never gets played. I know that's shorter then my BG-31 which is 32 inch.

You are correct. I just checked and they are a 30, not 32. I wonder what other bass I was thinking of? Maybe a Gibson Cassidy?
