Flatwounds with rosewood or maple fretboard? On a Am. Std. P Bass?

And Why?

Secondly which model would you prefer flatwounds on? The 2011 with alnico or the 2012 with custom shop pick ups?

 YES to all of the above. I keep flats on my '76 Precision with white neck, but flats will work just fine on any Precision, just as long as that is the sound you are after. :)

From 47 years experience with both P and J basses with Flats; Rosewood necks seem to be a little more mellow than maple necks... and flatwounds are a little more mellow than roundwounds.

If you want cool jazz mellow or country mellow, use flats with a rosewood neck. If you have a J-Bass that already has 'noseless' pickups, play the neck pickup only and leave the bridge pickup turned off for extra mellow and extra deep lows.

Flats on a rosewood P-Bass is a favorite sound of mine for modern country.

Putting flats on a maple neck slightly flattens out the bright characteristics of maple and will give you 'about' the same tone as using roundwounds on Rosewood.

The additional benefit of flats is generally much less fret wear along with a much lower chance of getting frayed splinters in your fingers.
