I just got a vintage 73 Precision from my uncle today. Beautiful bass with the original sunburst finish, tortuous shell pick guard and maple neck. My problem is I'm missing the bridge cover and I'm not sure if it came with a pickup cover as well, but if it did I'm missing that too. I was wondering if anyone knew of a place to get the vintage replacement covers for a 70's P bass.

Bridge cover is Fender part number 0010108000
Pickup cover is Fender part number 0010116070
Screws are Fender part number 0027035000

You can order through any Fender dealer that accommodates customers with parts orders, or order online from online parts dealers. Just two of them I'll list below. I've done business with both these outfits and they are good to deal with however there are many others selling these parts.

You may have to slightly bend the pickup cover to conform to the existing screw holes. The bridge cover doesn't usually require any such adjustment but the pickup cover almost always does.

I consider the pickup cover optional on a second generation (modern split coil pickup) Precision Bass. Many players leave this one off. Lots of players like playing directly over the pickup and use the top of the pickup as a thumbrest. This is acceptable due the durable plastic pickup housing. I however like the look of the covers and use them both.

The bridge cover is protective of the bridge components and prevents snagging trouser cuffs on the bridge which can cause a disastrous fall of the instrument. I don't consider the bridge cover as optional as the pickup cover.

The covers complicate string changes and bridge adjustments, but also serve protective functions, so it balances out. This instrument came with both covers. Leo Fender designed it with both covers. I think he knew what he was doing.

There was a OEM change after CBS took over in 1965 and the covers changed a bit shortly thereafter, but today's reproductions work with all of them. You may wish to relic the covers a bit because they are nice and shiny and brand new looking.
